Remote follow focus for £150/$300

i was kind of happy when the lady on the phone says Oo weve found a flightcase in the car. I hoped it was my lenses, as I could build another hofo in afew hours, the lenses are much harder to get back.

Oh well, maybe the lenses will turn up somewhere....

Charles Lowthian emailed me asking if I had a progress mailing list. I dont so I thought id make one.

Anyway, if you want to be on the Hocus Focus mailing list, then email me your name and email address, along with what kind of camera you will be using the HF with (just curious) and if you will require the 19mm rod mount adapter, receiver mounting kit (includes rod mount and shoe mount) and which pitch gears you need for the motor.

Email is pete<dot>hoare<at>gmail<dot>com

I will send out progress updates every now and again. This is also the email for general questions.

Thanks,

Pete.

Me n Wayne have had a long boring discussion about knobs and other things, and we have finaly got the knob and pointer nailed down. Will get the first few machined up as soon as I can.

Please excuse the primary school grade 3D model. First thing I ever made in 3D cad.

looks great!

btw, is there an option on the receiver to power it from external power source?

i was thinking of powering it from tekkeon which i use to power the monitor on the rig

I think Pete mentioned a few pages back that the receiver can be powered by a 4-pin XLR connected battery.

The power options are 4-pin XLR accessory power and an external battery pack.

Yeah, the receiver will accept a standard four pin XLR power input (12v).

It can also be powered off a four AA battery pack, but this should really be used as a backup only, as the motor is much slower with AAs.

Pete,

The unit looks great. In a subsequent video, can you show us calibration / program hard stops (understand that the motor is a placeholder for now) technique?

thanks!
in this case, does anyone know of an adapter that will convert any of the outputs circled in red on the attached image to 4-pin XLR male?
(DC out has 3 pins, that grey line is a bit in the way on the pic)

Thats not the kind of thing id ever power the HoFo with. Its ment for Vlock or AB batteries... you could probably make a cable up easiy enough tnough.

Wait, so is there an inexpensive way to power the HoFo for those of us who don't want to invest in AB or Vlock? I didn't know the AA operate at reduced efficiency and I really don't want to spend another couple of hundred $$ in a power solution.

I have been saying all along that the AA battery pack should really be used as a backup only. You shouldn't power stuff like this of a separate battery, best to plug it into a power rail.

If that device outputs 12v, then its fine....

What Pete means is that the turning speed will decrease when using the battery pack. The motor will just be running a bit slower. Obviously it is not optimal, but it will work fine unless you really need fast turning speed.
