someone keeps taking photos of my house at nighttime...

My friend's parent's had a similar problem with people they thought were casing the place. Mind you, I grew up out in the sticks along a rural part of the Canadian border, so calling the sheriff wasn't the fastest way of dealing with stuff as it took 10-15 minutes to get there and a lot could happen in 10-15 minutes.

So, my brother decided to take care of the problem while he was house sitting for them right after this started. After seeing them poking around the night before, he decides to stay up all night waiting for them... all 6'3", 280lbs of him. Sitting on the front porch. In his tighty-whities. And a cowboy hat. With a mouth full of chew, a coke in one hand, and a 12gauge across his lap.

Never had any problems again after that

Energy drinks (about 3 oughta do) + comfy lawn chair + shrubbery (for secreting yourself in) + baseball bat / 40" gag arm / heavy, rusted farm implement + naughty picture takers = a night of adventure.

That or call the cops. Come on though... you know you're thinking about it.

Taking some cues from the boys at Landmark?

Hire a big burly dude to dress up in a bear or gorilla suit and have him wait inside. He can watch the area where the flashes are. If it happens again, he runs out after pushing play on the stereo you have set up with wild animal sounds. Could add a strobe light and some generic techno music to really scare them. While this is occurring, you will of course be inside with your camera filming it all for us to see.

Seriously though. I would call the police on a non-emergency line or pop into the local station and file a report. Can't hurt. If anything they might have a patrol swing through your neighborhood at night to see if they see anything out of the ordinary.

Of course, it could be something completely harmless. It might be someone not unlike us filmmakers playing with their new D90 or location scouting. Maybe their film takes place at night and they are scouting at night.

I'd also get the motion detector lights that others have mentioned. Put anything valuable like your camera gear in a safe place so that no one can easily or quickly find it.

This reminds me of a time a few years ago when I was online researching the Men In Black (not the Will Smith movies but the real accounts and mythology). A few minutes after getting up from the computer, I look out the window and there is a suspicious black sedan sitting across the street. I can't remember the make or model of vehicle. The thing that made it unsettling was that it was not a car I recognized as belonging to any of the neighbors. There also appeared to be a figure sitting in the driver's seat. The car sat there for a while. The driver never exited the vehicle the whole time. After it left I never saw it again.

Make an adventure out of it. Get a few mates over and stake out the local area, capture it all on cam. And when and if the car arrives and snaps another pic, have all your mates dressed like zombies start crawling out of garden beds etc. FUN in the burbs :P

All you had to do was come out and tell me to stop! Jeez!

:D Kidding, obviously, this is very possibly a serious manner and I wish you safety and luck in resolving it!

Look for a human sized penguin with a camera. Maybe someone with drawing skills here can whip up a wanted poster.

You could always leave all your outdoor lights on until you get the chance to hook up a motion detector. If you don't already have one, you could put up a home security sticker on the front door and windows as well.

Get yourself a high powered sniper rifle and wait for it to happen again. :)

Tom buddy - stick to throwing bowling balls at peoples heads and leave the weaponry to experts. :)

A VSSK Vychlop will do you well. 5 shots to take down a target and we are playing with a .50cal bullet fired at subsonic speeds. Max operating range is 600 meters. This bad boy fires a high penetration round. Body armor be damned. An integral silencer will keep the shot pretty quiet.

Or the HK MP-5SD3 will do well in CQB. It's basically an MP-5A3. 30 round clip - 800 shots a minute. Integral silencer.

Really there are quite a few options here.

Yikes. He only needs to get rid of one guy, not half the block.
