Why did Vegas render my 16:9 project at 4:3?

It was shot in 1080 HD-24pa.

When I render, in the video settings, do I have to set the aspect ratio to 16:9? Doesn't it "know" this automatically?

It came out squeezed into a 4:3 frame.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

You need to export either in 1920x1080, or 1280x720 resolutions with aspect ratio 1.000 to get it widescreen for sure. If you instead export at 1440x1080 with aspect ratio 1.333, then not all players will support it in widescreen format. So it depends on your player and on your target device.

As for 24p, export at 23.976. Why do you need to add pulldown? What is your target device?

Make sure your project settings are set correctly too btw, not just your exporting dialog.

I'm rendering at 1920x1080, but my aspect ratio choices are 4:3, 16:9 and 2.21:1 (?).

All I'm looking for here is a DVD that will show the image in widescreen - letterboxed, I guess.

The pulldown thing was only mentioned because it's one of the frame rate options given (I'm using Vegas Pro 8.0).

So for my DVD, I'm going to attempt to render to MPEG-2, in 1920x1080, at 16:9, at 24p. Sound right?

Thanks Eugenia.

Also, what frame rate should I be telling it to render at? 24?

No. No such thing as 24 on DVD.

23.976 + 2-3 pulldown?
Yes. Note that this isn't actually pulldown -- it's pulldown FLAGS, or the instructions a DVD player will use to insert pulldown when playing to a 60i TV.

No. Render using the DVD Architect 24p Widescreen DVD template, but change the render quality to Best instead of Good. (This is 720 x 480, the resolution of NTSC DVD.)

Then, render your audio as AC-3, using the same file name. DVD Architect will mate them up automatically.

I assume that you will create the DVD with DVD Architect. So:

1. Select the right project properties on Vegas. If you don't know them, use the "match media" yellow icon found in that dialog.
2. Select RENDER AS from the FILE menu, and select the MainConcept Mpeg2 filetype.
3. Select the NTSC Widecreen mpeg2 template (or the equivalent 24p if it exists). This will export the video.
4. Select the AC3 filetype and export the audio.
5. Load DVD Architect, and bring in the DVD project the two files, and DVDA will put them back together.
