Love this look, how did they light

My guess:

Key about 5 o' clock, up high. Very soft. Spill is lighting the background behind them which seems to be dark gray.

Kicker at about the 9 or 10 o'clock position.

Hairlight seems to be centered and nearly down firing.

I wish I could get my kids to be that focused when they're needing to do productive things ;)

And did you see the kid from the band "Hanson" - wow, he hasn't aged at all!

I would guess that the set up is a large soft box in front of the camera, with light high and to the rear of the subject to get a little spill over the shoulders and separate the hair from the back ground. There may also be big diffusion panels to the side as well... the lighting seemed to change for some of the subjects, or perhaps it was just where they had moved during the shoot.

hmm, i feel like they used a separate light for the background. And both cheeks have a blueish hint of light, looks like there are two "rimlights". What do you think?

Definitely a big, soft source from the front, a top light and two rim lights. I love this look on photographs, but I'm not sure that it works for more filmic situations--feels too artificial for my style.

One soft source at front almost eye level - most likely a chimera or similar.

Two sources at rear as kickers and facing toward centre frame - Id say about 3/4's of the way to the bg from the monkeys. Seems to be using 1/4 to 1/2 ctb assuming the key has no cc gels.

One source for BG, most likely fresnel or something with a similar rolloff - dedo perhaps.

This is what the 'real' shot had, but it has been satanically backtracked with the frontal softbox... to be 'little innocent children'...

Yes.

Also, they're playing an actual game as well. That's why they're so focused. Or at least that's what it looks like. I imagine that they used a one-sided reflection and an LCD to project the game footage in front of the lens.

I thought this at first too, but then I noticed how little of the light was picked up in the eyes. The kids with prominent brows have dark eyes. Also, the (camera) right eyes seem to pick up more of the light than the left.

Yeah, I see what youre saying, but its probably relative to wattage and or amount of diffusion.
