Guns N Roses Chinese Democracy Thread

I take it all back. This will be great. I didn't realize this was supposed to be a comedy album.

I remember the day I first heard GnR. It was a pre-release thing for Appetite and I thought that I had just heard a very important band.

But then reality set in. Overhyped, overexposed and finally (thankfully) just over.

I put them right up there with Nirvana in the "people-think-they-are-important-because-that's-what-they-think-they-are-supposed-to-think" category. A great rock and roll band? Definitely. Influential? Just to people that didn't know that everything they did was derivative. Anything more? Only if you believe hype enough to think Hannah Montana is a real person.

That being said, I played the hell out of Appetite for at least 2 years after it's release, although I Used to Love Her is probably my favorite song of theirs.

I think the main problems with GNR was that they forgot who they were. And GnR without Slash is like Aerosmith without Perry or The Stones without Richards.

Anybody pick up Chinese democracy yet? I'm going to get it this week! I've heard a couple tracks online, WOW! Axl still has his voice pretty well in tact. It has gotten pretty good reviews.

"This I Love" is the new "November Rain" beautiful song!

I can thank my older brother for getting me hooked on GNR back when I was a little one.

So I've heard all the tracks, WOW! It way surpassed my expectations. Some really great songs. I like every single track some better than others but still great album. Some new GNR classics in this.

Did you get it yet Jeremy?

Release day I got it on CD and vinyl...

It is actually a pretty good album, which is completely shocking to me.

Chinese Democracy, the song, is a strange choice as a single to release and it really does sound crunchy like a bad industrial song, but it is a pretty solid and interesting tune.

Overall there is just one song that I'm not a big fan of, but it is a highly listenable album with a bunch of good songs.

I'm a fan and pretty impressed overall... not 17 years of waiting impressed, but considering the train wreck I expected it to be, I am pretty happy about the album.

Egad, are you guys kidding? This album is downright goofy, overproduced within an inch of its life, rocks about as hard as Hannah Montana, with lyrics about as deep as John Tesh.

To quote Hudson: "Bad bad gayness."

Why is nobody talking about the FREE DR. PEPPER?!

I hate that stuff, but would love to see an ambitious project such as trying to deliver one to every person in the USA. LOL.

At first, I totally didn't get this comment. Then I went online and read what you were referring to HERE and thats just damn silly. What the hell does Dr. Pepper have to do with an album release? Why not give out a block of cheese? Or an apple. Or a mini bar of soap? I just don't get the connection. So random.

I picked this album up yesterday and I have to say I am a bit shocked... at how good it is. Overproduced? Yes. But still, for an album 14 years in the making, I am impressed. I genuinely like it, but I only really bought it for the novelty.

The albumm and the sound are completely overproduced.

Regarding how good it is for 14 years in the making, I don't know. I think it is a good album but for 14-17 years (depending how you look at The Speghetti Incident) in the making I expect something life changing.

It is hardly life changing, but it was enough to make me buy, and not regret, the album. It is also the first album I have bought since NIN's With Teeth.

I missed this post

But damn. Totally disagree. Nirvana and GnR are two of the finest bands in Rock History.

I completely agree with this. While I am not a fan of everything Nirvana, their place in history is firmly secured and they really were a quality band.

My opinion of Guns N Roses is no secret. When I got Appettite I hid the cover art with the chicks breast hanging out from my parents because it was so graphic... I felt rebellious just having the album with this artwork. The music itself was simply brilliant.

Appettite is one of those albums you can list as a perfect album... there is not a bad song on the entire album... You can hardly make this statement regarding most recording artists/bands and the accomplishment of a perfect album is, in my opinion, a huge achievement. GnR never achieved it again, and most bands, in my opinion, never accomplish it once.

The perfect album is to music what the perfect game is to baseball...

While Chinese Democracy is no perfect album, and while it sure as hell is no Appettite, it is a decent album...

An old college roommate called me a few weeks ago. I hadn't spoken with him in like 5-6 years and we chatted for 30 minutes catching up. It was good to hear from him and find out that he had a couple of kids and that life was good for him.

Chinese Democracy is like that phone call. Its hearing from an old friend and hearing that he is doing well. You are flooded with memories not only of who they were but who they are today... You are happy they are doing well and they still know what was great about them in the past...

In all honesty, what more can we ask from a band and an album?

I heard bits and pieces. Sounds good. I used to play a few G&R in the late 80's till 90.
Good band. More of an in-your-face party style than anything serious musically.

I saw them in T.O back when. Good Concert. They all delivered the money.
Album wise, not something I'd go out and buy as a keep sake, but the boys do rock it out hard I must admit.

I saw them in Orlando on New Years Eve years ago. It was a double header with Metallica... Wow, what a great poo pooing concert that was...

I might have to check out the new album though...

I'm definitely not a Nirvana fan...

It's funny, I used to be mad that they were one of the bands responsible for the decline of hair metal, which I loved. Now I'll listen to an online radio station that only plays hair metal and I think to myself, wow, this is some pretty cheesy stuff. :cheesy:

I remember when I was younger and they came to St. Louis. That was when Axl jumped in the crowd the famous "take that" "take that camera". Don't think he ever came back to st. Louis since that incident.

My uncle was on the news he was at that concert.
