Thinking of moving to New York...

Tom Marshall

Actor!!!!!!
...to do some theatre and really work on the acting. I need to do stage and build the chops... and pay some dues...

Yeah cause you go visit them all the time Capt I live close to LA but never actually go :) And anyways I prefer Chicago style pizza. Move to Chicago Tom!

But you're from LA, isn't the local theater scene good enough?

It's cold in NY, no Tommy's Burgers, No in N out, no Lakers. I bet the Mexican food sucks too.

this aint move to NY season, man. Kind of a weenie shrinker there this time of year.
head west, young man.

Nick, how many times have you come over here to visit? Just the once for the dvxuser festival. Besides, I'm sure I'll wind up back in LA some day...

And Jeff... no, no Chicago. :)

Josh - I've never been to New York. I've never even seen the Statue of Liberty...

Brian - No, the local theatre scene isn't good enough. All serious actors work in NYC. Film actors (the good ones) usually start off in NY on Broadway or Off Broadway or Off Off Broadway and then do film because they're tired of doing theatre or they're looking for a nice paycheck. I'm not at that point yet though...

Grinner - Oh I wouldn't move now. I'd wait till probably March or April. I've got way too many ends to tie up before moving... :)

Tom-

We need to talk. I am planning on moving back to NY myself. Obviously, LA and NY are BOTH acting juggernauts but there are stark differences which may or may not appeal to you. I've done tons of theater but zip, zero, zilch camera work unless you count my friend's High School film. Which, umm, you shouldn't. Thing is, there are some great off and off off broadway venues in upstate NY just north of the city. Living in North NJ or Upstate NY near the Metro North train will appeal to you.

If your ultimate goal is to be versatile...to do theater and film/tv, to be a working stage actor etc...it might be the move for you. If you want to ultimately do nothing but film and television I can understand John's metaphor.

However, New York and LA are very different places and depending on what your long and short term goals are moving to NY isn't an insane idea. Perhaps you are in a rut...or need the creative 'shock' or 'inspiration'. Sometimes you gotta get away to understand what you left. Either way, I can understand your wonder. I guess its all about different strokes... I loved LA, the lifestyle, the sun etc. But, it never felt 'right' to me. In addition to the theater, NY is filled with tons of art and energy and for that reason alone, its worth its weight gold and in the moving expense.

They both have tons of pros. So, lets talk. I will tell you all you need to know about the lifestyle which is important to know. What to expect from the seasons, things to do, and just some general info you will be hard pressed to get from a google search. Plus, if we do wind up moving back at the same time, (I'm thinking Feb/March), it wouldn't hurt for you to know someone semi-familiar. Whether you wind up moving or not, New York City is one of the most awesome cities on Earth. Although, I've never been to Prague, Paris, Rome, Madrid, London, Moscow or Bejing. Either way, I think New York City has got to be up there.

Rick

PS Okay, what the hell did I miss? I thought ConspiracyPenguin was a chick and now shes a Nick Lane? Wtf? What thread did I miss?

You're in Los Angeles and you think New York will help you ?

That's like moving from Tahoe to Colorado to become a better skier.

Hey John, I hope this is a good analogy -

Let's say you're a jazz musician and you're living in Nashville. You're in the perfect place to be to record albums. You'll have quite a few talented studio musicians to record with, but there's really no way to play live with really good players and people that really appreciate live jazz Music.

Now, say, New Orleans is the place to be that has some of the most talented jazz musicians in the world and you can play live to a huge audience just about every night of the week.

What do you do? Stay in Nashville and work on trying to get a record deal and playing small gigs every so often or do you move to New Orleans and really get into the music there and become a better musician?

Rick - We definitely need to talk. What are you doing next weekend? Say, Saturday? I could make a road trip or we can meet halfway or something. Sound good?

gimme a shout when you're coming Tommy. Do you have a plan of attack? NYC will suck you dry in no time without a plan.

I have no plan of attack. I'm going to start looking into things and see what it cost to live there and where things are.

I'll probably be asking you a bunch of questions between now and a possible move date, which would probably be March.

Do me a favor and PM me your #. :)

damn tom! Moving to the big apple eh?

Curious to see where that takes you. Regardless, I'm sure you'll be successful at whatever you do.

The weather isn't as bad as you LA folks make it out to be. It's not bad in the city itself. Since it is pretty insulated by the buildings. Always things to do. Never a dull moment.

The theatre scene is amazing as well. Best place in the US for it. Since there are Broadway shows, which are all open audition. Off-broadways, and off-off broadways always going up left and right.

The off-off broadway houses cycle shows really quickly. And there is always someone trying to make the next big hit.

I'd say the move would be great. I am in love with NYC. Not there as often as I would like. But I am moving into the city in December. Working on Wall Street - so I should be living around E72nd and Lexington for a month.

Yes it will. Definitely good if you have some friends and places to crash before you get settled, even better if you can come out for work or are a waiter so you can at least make some quick living cash. This city is expensive.

It is really tough for actors here. I've worked with a lot of good actors who struggle, they keep busy but they're not living off the acting. Call it paying dues but they really love doing this. And then there's the actor's here who keep chugging who don't strike fire, and then there's the people taking up space. I think it would be better if every actor were also a writer so they could write themselves material.

Agreed, that's the thing Tommy has to be aware of, he's not going to show up and start doing Broadway. I have friends I went to acting school with almost 20 years ago who are just now getting into Broadway. It;s a whole career of its own.

However, I do think there is a good chance, if one is serious, of falling in with good people and a good teacher(I can recommend some) and learning a lot and doing a lot of work to grow. If that is his goal, I agree with him that he can do it here.

That said, Tommy, what kind of training do you have? You can get good training in LA too, and that is also a good way to meet other people as serious as you about the craft.
