Importing Backed-Up HVX200 footage into Vegas?

Hi there,

I directed a project a few months ago that was shot on the HVX-200, and at the time the editor copied all the backup files to my external hard drive. They appear in a folder structure named P1, P2, P3, etc, and then within each folder is a folder called CONTENTS, and within that are folders called AUDIO, CLIP, ICON, PROXY, etc.

I'd like to get this footage into Vegas and work with it, if possible. Can anybody point me to a tutorial?

Thanks.

Okay, I installed Raylight and now I can drag the MXF files into the timeline, that's great! Thanks.

But the clips are upside-down. That's strange.

And what about the audio associated with the files?

Help!

Okay, I figured out how to rotate the image 180 degrees in the Raylight configuration.

But the audio is still vexing me. Any help appreciated.

The footage was probably shot with a lens adapter, which is why it would be upside-down. But you figured that out.

The audio files should be brought in automatically with the video files (the first two audio files, anyway). Look in the Contents folder -- there should be an Audio folder. Are there MXF files in there? If not, whoever copied these cards didn't copy over everything.

Hi David,

There are indeed MXF files in the audio folder, and they appear to have similar (if not exact) names to the video files. Any reason they wouldn't be getting pulled into the timeline with the video files? Is that something Raylight does automatically?

This is a bit strange...in the first of my folders, there are 13 video files but 48 audio files. Why would that be?

If it's all HD, you should have 4 audio files for each video file. Each audio file represents a single channel of audio, and in DVCPRO HD, 4 channels of audio are always recorded. Some of them may be blank if there were no mics to record to the external inputs.

Raylight should bring in the Video file with the first two channels of audio as a stereo audio track.

How exactly are you bringing in the video files?

I'm just dragging the MXF files from the VIDEO folder into the timeline.

There seems to be one audio file brought in with it, but it's empty.

I tried dragging audio MXF's into the timeline, but that doesn't work.

What that means, most likely, is that channels 1 and 2 of the audio are empty. If there's actual audio recorded, it'll be in channels 3 and 4.

What you need to do is convert the Audio folder's MXF files into WAVs; you can do this with RayMaker by dropping the Audio folder in.

Then, bring in the WAV files for channels 3 and 4. These files will end in "02" and "03."

Worked like a charm. Wow. Great work, David, thank you.

Next question: when I go to shoot my next project on Friday, and then dump the HVX-200 cards right into my laptop, are they going to appear in the same file structure as this?

What's the process for taking information off the cards and storing it somewhere that can be used by Vegas? I assume there's a tutorial somewhere for this...

The P2 cards carry the same file structure. You want to maintain it when you offload, or Raylight won't be able to provide you the audio.

So when I plug the card into the slot on my laptop, it's essentially like having an external hard drive, just drag and drop onto my local hard drive?

The best way to do it is to use P2 Viewer (which you get with the P2 driver and software). But I've offloaded hundreds of cards simply by taking the Contents and LastClip.txt over to the hard drive as is.

Plugged in, the P2 card DOES act exactly like any other drive, because that's exactly what it is. It's a memory card.
