so now i feel like an idiot...confusing as heck....so why all the push to shoot everything in HD. I keep on hearing Feb 09...Feb 09 HD is coming...I was like...HD is here..I guess it makes perfect sense...no need for me to change gear if it is just going to be delivered digitally...my dvx productions should still look good

What is happening, unless something happens... is that Analog over-the-air broadcasts are going black in the US. What will be broadcast over-the-air, will be digital, which may include original HD material, upresed SD, or the like.

It may be that some stations will only accept HD material in general, and only upres when required on a case by case basis...

Since I'm not interested in broadcast, I haven't worried about whatever will happen when analog over-the-air in the US dies...

note that many will also be broadcasting digital SD material as well. digital does not equal HD it only give the stations the ability to broadcast in HD as there is no standard for HD analog OTA signals.

You might want to look into acquiring the 16x9 add-on lens for the DVX though, I think it is sheer folly to shoot anything these days in 4x3. Good clean anamorphic SD can uprez to HD surprisingly well if the correct procedures are used.

Hey Dan:

Thanks for this tidbit...I just purchased the Panasonic Anamorphic Converter. I am so excited to continue to shoot with my trusty DVX100A. Are there any rules that I should follow the correctly shoot good clean anamorphic SD? Are there step by step instructions around here?

Thanks

from an interview with sandy collora who did a couple fan films ("Batman: Dead End") and is finishing up his first original feature, Hunter Prey, (with the help of guillermo del toro):

"Of course, I think it's great that [digital camera technology] is becoming more available to filmmakers, especially the younger guys, but it's my personal belief that it's not the tools or the technology that make good movies, it's the people using those tools."

Regardless of technology talent is still required. I'm amazed at the number of people on this board that keep deflecting their creative energy to worrying about whet they can't control. Make the film, make a Great film and see where the chips fall. Someone once asked Tom Clancy what advice he would give a new aspiring novelist. he said "Write the damn book."

So go film...... we want to see what you create.

Cannes Short Corner? I'd take it anywhere else but there. I was at cannes last year and honestly you have a better chance of someone seeing it at a swap meet than in the shorts corner. There are hundreds of films there, and the screening rooms are cubicles with computer monitors.

As for HD vs. SD, I'd go HD if you can, there are so many more oppurtunies with the format. While I agree it all comes down to story, some people won't have the time or day to look at your film if they see its in SD
