Shooting in the snow

EDIT: I have never shot with a dvx only an hvx.

I know it's pretty tuff to keep things uniform in those conditions. Have you seen Iditarod on Discovery channel? It's all over the board for white balance, chroma ect. and these are pro's who have shot thousands of hours of footage.

You might want to pm barry and ask him how to set up your dvx for those conditions.

I have an expo disk for my hvx that is convienant and fast for white balance.

Does anyone have advice for shooting video in the snow? (camera settings, filters, etc.)

The issue is brightness and contrast from the snow. The in-camera ND filters are probably not enough, and as mentioned in another post, use a polarizing filter to cut some of the glare, to get detail.

If your subject is moving, like on skies... you're going to pretty much have to live with whatever compromise you can get by dropping the scene brightness through filters.

If you have a more static series of shots, screens, bounce cards, and anything to minimize the contrast of the scene are advised.

Oh, and what about the minimum operating temperature of your equipment???

min operating temp is just about always 32F, 0C. But there are many other factors that come into play - humidity, cloud cover are the big 2.

Check out a film called "Let The Right One In". It's filmed in Sweden and many scenes are in the snow. Especially cool are the night scenes in the snow.

let the snow hit 105 IRE, ( there is still detial there) and bring the mids up in post. Thats all you can do in Video.

What are you gonig to do with the knee?

Please do NOT use auto. What ever you do stick with one setting.
