Sony's $800 Cell Phone

yeah i would to if i had money to blow, it looks really nice. But wait, i have a laptop, i have a phone, why must people always have the need to combine two things!? hahaha and why must i have a impulse to buy something i obviously dont need, the world may never know.

The bizzword is "Convergence" the electronics industry is trying hard to merge as many devices into one as possible.

With the increase in CPU power/size/price more and more functionality can be done in one device.

Granted a single "swiss army" type device will never replace a dedicated device, but its very very nice to have;

I predict the next big historical event will be caught not on any expensive dedicated camera, but through the cheap plastic lens of a cell phone.

Sorry, I just see products like this as a symptom of the sickness.

It's because financially uneducated consumers have been conditioned into thinking that blowing $800.00 on a cell phone is a sane, rational thing to do. It's part of the reason why our economy is in the toilet, people don't save or invest wisely, they buy $800.00 cell phones, $10,000.00 home entertainment centers and gas guzzling SUVs...wait for it...on credit. It's all disposable crap. When it is disposed of in a couple of years, they want to buy new disposable crap.

Then they have to declare bankruptcy when they can't pay off their credit cards that they used to buy all of the disposable crap. It's interesting that we always make fun of newly signed pop-stars, rappers and hip-hop artists because they all live large, and unless they turn into Jay-Z, then go broke, yet we, as average Americans, do the same thing. Live large on credit with money we don't have, then crash and burn. Problem is that all of the financially responsible people and the government have to pickup the pieces and eventually we all pay for the financial irresponsbility.

Maybe Depression 2.0 in the long run will be a good thing because it will reduce the amount of people who CAN do this. Credit tightening up is not good for business but the silver lining is hopefully less consumers getting credit cards and houses that they can't afford.

The new buzzword should be, "live within your means" for everyone.

That's my rant for this weekend.

hmmmm the deficit of your government speaks another lingo....they are THE FIRST to blow the money....why should citizens not do as their "leaders" show them ? *sarcasm off*

Guilty as charged. It is coming out now that Congress was more than aware of the impending bank/home loan fiasco as long as 10-12 years ago as it was building up.

It is unfortunate when citizens of any country blindly march in locked step with any government. I love my country, America is still the greatest country in the world but after all that, we as a country seem to be evolving more and more toward fat, lazy and stupid. And now the entire global economy, which is inextricably intertwined with our own, is in a meltdown.

Wow, we are long way off of discussing a Sony cell phone, aren't we? ;-)

Dan

Poor Sony :p , perhaps the industries should start thinking about pricing that better reflects the current global economic situtation.

Unfortunately, development times for so many things take so long now, it wouldn't surprise me if the design for this product was being finalized 2-3 years ago when the world was a different place.

I even experience this in a small way all of the time. The DVD projects that I produced for Paramount in June of this year just came out this week. I want to send copies to all of the participants but I have done so many project since June, I am having a hard time digging out all of the names and addresses (where did I put those?)

I also write for HD Video Pro Magazine. I turned in my audio column that will run in the February '09 issue last month. Most the time I have totally forgotten what I even wrote about by the times my articles hit the news stands.

Long lead times seem to be a way of life for me.

Dan

Yeah.. who would pay 800.00 for this thing... cough...

And, Dan, before you start peeing on my feet about credit debt: I pay cash for everything.

=D I like donuts.

Yes, but are you debt-free and is your kids college paid for? ;-) Sorry man, if your dad isn't saying this to you, I gotta.

Dan

I don't think you read me: I pay cash for everything. =D I'm debt free, my friend.

And I don't have any kids! LOL

I'm only poking fun at ya. I know what ya mean about saving and all of that.

Damn! Debt free and no kids, you are smart! ;-)

Rock on, you can buy anything you want and will incur no browbeating from me!

Dan

realistically i have no practical use for this phone, but it's just so damn cool that there has to be a way kholi can scrape together $800 to buy this thing for me.
