Is everyone's ultimate goal to direct Hollywood features?

Hollywood is such a subjective terminology these days... I'd LOVE to have 100mil. to spend on directing my sci-fi epic drama... will that happen? Who knows... It's something to pursue... you have to shoot for the top, is my motto. Most of all I want to glorify God in my work, and in doing so I want to work with excellence whether the budget is 10k, 100k, 1million, or 100million.

I'm more spiritual than religious bricemasta, but would love to see more biblical epics.

Whether one believes in the power of god, there i some truth to the historical elements

I moved to Los Angeles 3 years ago to pursue my filmmaking dreams. I've taken the screenwriting path which is finally paying off. I'm a full-time working writer now and have an incredible agent and managing team behind me as of three weeks ago. Things are looking great, so I'm essentially living my dream, though ultimately I want to direct my work too, not just sell my scripts. My agent and I are confident we can make that happen through time as well.

my goal is to be able to walk into the video store and rent one of my movies.

if i fail, i'm just going to pick out a crappy movie that no one watches and stick my dvd in it. i'll print out a jacket off my computer and stick it on the shelves of blockbuster.

Biblical epics could really shine with todays visual effects technology. Of course, the script would have to be done right which could be tricky with all the controversy that religion can dredge up in today's climate.

alveraz -- I sometimes wonder if focusing on writing is the best path for me currently. Making a film that can actually be sold is next to impossible if you don't have stars and big money, neither of which are available to me. I do have good ideas though. Do you focus on screenplays or other types of writing like novels or comic books. I seem to remember you having a comic book project here a while ago. Anyways, congratulations on the recent career successes.

ugafan -- I've thought of doing this before too. Just for fun of course. I think it would be hilarious. Although, if you put your website's URL at the beginning and then again before the end credits played, you might be onto an interesting guerilla marketing tactic. You could hit all the Blockbusters and Hollywood video stores and hell, even leave random copies lying around in public places like Starbucks or something.

I still write comics in my spare time and have a small press launching next month that will have a few titles for sale, one of which my own. But screenwriting has become a full-time job so it's not easy to juggle.

You are right, selling a screenplay is not easy, but I can tell you that once you land a good agent, doors start to open all over the place. Good times, and good luck!

Not necessarily to be directing but anything related to VFX, cinematography, editing..etc feature films is my dream :).

Thanks alveraz. You're right, juggling two things plus a day job is not easy. I think I am going to try to get a couple of really excellent feature screenplays written this year, and then start the quest for an agent once I have finished all the rewriting. Although, now that ugafan has sparked this great covert marketing idea I might have to see what I can do with something crazy like that. I'd also like to write a novel. Do most agents that represent screenwriters also have the ability to represent you as a writer of printed fiction or do you need a dedicated agent for that?

I would be totally happy directing straight to DVD features and making a decent living from it. I have already shot 1 feature length film that is awaiting approval now and we are well into the next feature. They are not great movies but movies nonetheless. If Hollywood came calling I would go, But I have not the lottery yet so I won't hold my breath. Although I want to get good enough where that could happen and most importantly have fun doing it. I really love this stuff.

I love to shoot. My goal is to DP and have a production company and occasionally direct a feature. To me this keeps me in the game all the time and working. Directing seems to be something that would be hard to make any money at in the beginning. Unless you bust out a kick ass feature that gets noticed, how long before you get that big job or one that can sustain a family? At least shooting you can work on your craft more and get paid to do it. Thats not why I love shooting but thats my perception of directing for a living.

My goal is to shoot the video of the Hollywood director hiring transexual prositutes and sell it to TMZ.com. So if you want to call that directing in Hollywood, heck yeah. But it's not really a feature.

My goal is far more ambitious then Hollywood. I want to work on a project where no one irritates the crap out me anytime throughout the process. It can be indie or it can be mega-budget. Movie project or a music project. Experienced/talented crew, musicians or friends. One project where by the time it's finished I don't wish I was back to working in a grocery store......
