can't use field monitor when editing

Suddenly my computer freezes up and refuses to work with I connect a camcorder so I can watch my edited footage on a field monitor. It also freezes when I try to load tapes with the camcorder.

Is this a virtual memory issue?

Is there a way to watch my footage while editing on a field monitory without using a camcorder? It seems the problem begins with the camcorder.

Not normally a problem viewing from a computer via firewire if there is a "converter" in the middle of the stream. eg a camera or a device such as Canopus advc110.

Maybe you have a firewire cable / card / driver problem?

If the project is small (new) it won't freeze when I hook up a camcorder for tape capture, but it always freezes when I turn on the field monitor.

Could the problem be the camcorder? It's new and used only for tape capture, but I never had this problem with my old camcorder used for tape capture (it's dead now).

The computer resumes working after I turn the camcorder off.
 
Do you have multiple Firewire devices attached at the same time?

I think a computer can only work with one at a time. eg fw conflict.
