How to archive a project with media ?

To start with i know that theres a save and trim media with project in the save dialog.
But what about large projects that wont fit onto a dvd for archiving ?

Im currently editing 2 x 45 minute features. Ive got their total footage as uncompressed avi's on my footage drive. Nearly 200gb of footage. But the project final is about 45 minutes in duration. Is there any method to archive this so that im safe if i have to render out the same to another format or something in the future ?

Ive heard some folks save to cineform and then archive. Is this ok. And how would i do it ? Save the entire final output as a cineform version also ? (so that i could in the future drop it onto the timeline and render out to some other format when needed, or will that result in a generation loss)

But a 250gb hard drive will hardly hold 2 of my projects footage.

Jake > Almost all my projects are HD. The uncompressed footage is also 720p uncompressed 24 bit avi's.

But i would like to know if some members here render the entire final version of the project to Cineform and archive that ? If thats possible id like to know if theres a visible loss in quality when you drop the cineform file back onto the timeline and rerender.

The idea of the hard drive is have one per project, if keeping a digital archive is that important.

You could always get a 1 TB drive to hold more projects, but I know thats not what your really looking for. I never tried archiving to Cineform.

Jake > the problem is that we render a lot of videos every now and then and many vairants too which dont warrant the cost of investing in a HDD on a per project basis. But that doesnt mean your idea is not the right one. But it just means for our situation i cant do this. It makes sense if we were commercially editing stuff for others where there a commercial influx. But as i must let you know our entire edit suite was invested for just our own use and we arent even a broadcast channel or anything. Just a live event team and we invested in Vegas and decently powerful associated hardware just to edit our own stuff.

I wouldn't recommend archiving in an intermediate codec. That's not what it's for; any later results will be less than ideal.
