8mm to Video

Hi there,

Just wanted to know what places you guys prefer for transferring regular 8mm to video. Most places do both super and regular 8mm so super 8 shooters - chime in as well.

I'm not sure I will have enough money for a full-blown telecine, but I am considering everything at this point, from a DIY projector-miniDV cam setup to a session at a lab with a daVinci setup.

Thanks!

Wow.. Video killed the celluloid star..

Anyhow, for those looking for this kind of information - I found a few places. The ones I gave preference to are the places that offered capture directly onto hard drives and in formats other than miniDV (preferably uncompressed).

The last link seems like a bargain, but upon checking the order form I found them mentioning some sort of uncompressed fee of $100. They do transcode to DVCPro though, which would be more than sufficient and is actually preferable (50mbps vs. 270). That hopefully takes care of the 'uncompressed fee' as well. On their site they also have prices for hard drives, but you can supply your own.

Now, if that's a little too expensive still, there are these guys:

The Black and White Film Factory guys use the Sniper system that movieFactory have developed which involves the image being projected onto a ground glass, and a 3CCD built-in camera capturing it. Unlike the MovieStuff themselves though, they offer the output as a sequence of TIFF files onto a hard drive. I'll double check that they are not stills from the miniDV capture, but fairly certain they're not.

By the way, if you're looking for regular 8mm stock, this guy has the largest selection. He's both both Kodachrome and Ektachrome, as well both kinds of black and white reversal stock, in 25 and 100ft, and he accepts PayPal.

:Drogar-Mark-04(DBG)We at Black & White Film Factory do have a Sniper unit but there is no ground glass. It captures individually each frame directly to CCD. We offer final video to miniDV/DVCam tapes, DVD or computer file .avi or QT to Hard drive or CD/DVD. To view our samples visit us at www.blackandwhitefilmfactory.com
