Video/multimedia production contracts

Hello All, I have recently received my first serious shafting in the independent contractor world. I trusted some clown who hired me to put together two man prod crews for his webisode based production. He is nowhere to be found and im out many thousands. I am looking for a legitimate video/multimedia production contract. I own a llc and need something more than an 'independent contractor agreement.' there seem to be a decent amount you can buy online, but im not sure if there legit.

Any advice or help in this issue would be greatly appreciated.

You gave him finished work or tapes before payment? Everyone gets burned once, learn from this.

Even if you had a contract do you think he would have paid? You would need to burn time & effort trying to collect from this scumbag, even if you had a rock solid contract. File this away as experience, and NEVER, hand over field tapes or work that isnt watermarked without payment.

I generally request payment as follows:

1/3 at project inception, 1/3 after client accepts working copy and final 1/3 on delivery of master or finished multimedia presentation.

I allow for three interations of changes while editing or structuring the multimedia output. I watermark my video and the multimedia presentation. This is removed in the master files.

You can vary the amounts depending on your trust and comfort with the client. Remember a contract simply gives you the right to sue (if you can find the client) and the suit may cost as much or more than the amount owed. Don't depend on attorneys or paper agreements get enough money at the start to cover at least your expected expenses.
