Exernal Monitoring in 16:9 on a 4:3 Monitor

My CRT monitor that I use on my edit suite does not have a 16:9 switch. So when I view anamorphic footage it usually looks squished on capture and in the viewer. But when I put in the time line it would look right. That was when I used a FW cable to a DV cam and ran a composite cable to the monitor. I recently got an Intensity Pro card and just captured some anamorphic footage. Now it looks squished in both the viewer and the timeline on the external. It also looks squished if I monitor on my second computer monitor.
If I go into my sequence settings and click the 16:9 anamorphic box (something I have never had to do to see the footage correctly), it looks correct when I monitor on the computer monitor, but not on the external CRT. Is this something related to the IP card? I switched some of the settings there (HD to 16:9 Letterbox and HD to 16:9 Anamorphic for output) and it actually made it worse.

The weirdest thing is that I looked at some 2:1 Red footage, and that aspect ratio was correct on the external with no adjustments.

Any thoughts?

Not sure why the RED footage would work. UNLESS... what you are dealing with there is a true widescreen format and the intensity card is processing it correctly.

Remember, what you have now is ANAMORPHIC footage - by definition, 4:3. The only way to get this to look right is to create a 4:3 sequence and drop the 16:9 into it. This will update as you edit the 16:9 sequence, so when you want to view the edit on an external monitor you have to switch sequences. Yes, not ideal... but could work for clients.

Good luck,

You need to get a 16:9 switchable monitor if you want to monitor anamorphic via video out.

does your card have a control panel to switch to letterbox or something? i have the matrox mxo connected to my 23" acd and a regular 4:3 sd tv at the same time. for the tv out (s-video) i can specify that it is a 4:3 display and the mxo will letterbox all wide footage including anamorphic 16:9.

as far as the red footage displaying properly goes, i'm sure it is because the red is true 2:1 (or whatever you cropped to), not stretched 4:3.
