projected cost of P2 media

Ohh ya, if other vendors don't want to make them or pull out it goes to show you where P2 is headed for the future.

Hi Chip,
I wonder too, if Fuji pulled the pin because the cards maybe so difficult and so expensive and so electronically complicated that it's just all too hard.
They will be about for some time to come I believe, but may become used by a niche "slot of users".
I said in another thread , " I hope the cost of cards is not P2's epitaph"

I think if someone figured out a remedy for P2 like the SD's in the SxS cards for the EX-1 there would be less panic but thats not the case...

I'm ok with P2 for right now (11-26-2008).

ChipG. I had a '69 Z28 and sold it in '79 so I could go to graduate school. Still wondering if that was the right choice.

For pros, P2 cards, for most applications are cheap. If you shoot hundreds of cards worth of shooting per year and cost out your P2s against tape stock (DVCProHD), you will see that P2 is cheap.

I made the suggestion to my boss and the senior producer at our office to try the SD card hack for the EX1. They both said no way, too iffy (drops frames after 40fps and the SD card hack is not supported or proven by Sony or the users who are using them yet.) They will keep buying $800.00 SxS cards and P2 cards for their HVXs. When you have a $250,000.00 budget project or even a $50,000.00 project, P2 cards are not expensive. If you are a hobbiest who needs to shoot long events, P2 cards are expensive but the format is aimed toward working pros.

For non-pros, or pros who need to shoot endless hours of footage, I recommend the HMC-150. That's the entire reason Panasonic came out with the 150, for those who couldn't foot the bill for P2 cards. We are all spolied, every market segment seems to be covered pretty well in the Panasonic line these days.

Just my take on it.

I had two of them, still have my roteserie resto one. No regrets here because I can buy it back today for 30% chaeper than I sold it for.

Dan,

I think a lot of it comes from all the magazine and press articles when the hvx came out saying how affordable and large P2 cards will be in a couple years and yes they are now large with the 64 gig introduction but not as affordable as most have hoped for. I'm not saying Panny hyped it that way but most video magazines that did reviews on the hvx and P2 did.

I think thats where most peoples expectations have come from including mine.

That is true, they did kind of initimate that the cost of P2 would be lowering, which it has to a point, but not as rapidly as many people had hoped. I only have two 8GB and two 16GB cards and that works for me for most of my shoots but it would be nice to be able to spring for two 32s or two 64s. For me, it is totally driven by work. If I book a $100,000.00 project and need two 64s, I buy them. But yes, I can see how for some users, P2 is too costly.

In my situation, P2 is not too costly unless I want to have five to ten hours worth. Luckily one of my main clients owns twelve 16GB cards so when I shoot for them, I have all the space I could ever want.

Interestingly I find that I like having just enough P2 space to shoot all day without dumping cards in some situations. It is actually making me go back to a more film style of shooting, you know, rehearse the shot a couple of times when working with talent, then roll, rather than rolling ad infinitum all day and giving the editor a heart attack when they have to sift through so much material. When life give you lemons...

I am surprised that Fuji never followed through with their P2 cards. A bit of competition would have lowered prices eventually. They must be really expensive to make or TDK or Maxell or someone else would have came out with them, undercut Panny 25% and taken market share. I bet that Panasonics license agreement if you want to license and manufacture P2 cards would be interesting to read.

Best,

Dan

Hi Guys,

I chased up Fuji 32 gig cards today and have ordered One 32 gig, they are not on the open market as yet but my supplier tells me he can supply me a FUJI P2 32 gig card at cheaper than the Pan 32 gig price.
I'll advise when it arrives of cost and performance.
Cheers

Oh, so the Fujis are still happening? Wow!

Please report back if your supplier comes through and if so how was the performance and cost?

It threw me off to, I had called several Panny hvx & hpx dealers and no one new anything or had not heard of a release date.

I hope for all of us they do make it to market.

Wow! Link us please! Where did you find that?

EDIT #2: Reading/Writing Speed (*2) = 640 Mbps ?!?! Am I missing something?!? 640Mbps?!? wouldn't that be enough for MUCH more than 1080-60p DVCPRO HD? so the whole 4:4:4: thing with P2's would be possible in the future? I never knew Panasonic P2's were that fast and I guess they've always been...

EDIT #3: So I guess they have 16's and 32's but they are not out yet?

They are not out yet and I'm still not sure if they cancelled production on them or not. All I have found are press releases and articles from a year ago and none of the Panny dealers I have talked to know a release date for them.

Wonder if Jan would know what the scoop is on them?

They do seem to have other media like pro VHS on that page that makes me wonder if the fact that they are there means nothing.

Hi Guys,
I asked all your questions you alluded to, I was told they can be ordered and purchased , But they are not publicly available as yet. my supplier got a head start.
So I have ordered a 32 gig and am waiting for delivery as we speak. I was told the cost would be below what I paid for my last 32gig Pan cards. any discount is welcome when you have five slots and 50% of my work is long form.
Now may sell my 4 x 8 gig cards, any interest out there ???
Cheers

Good to hear that, maybe an Australia release before the US?

If you don't mind please let us know when your card comes in.

My supplier sells fuji products, I told him how much I paid for the Pana 32gig , he said they would be cheaper. That was enough for me to order one.
I trust this guy explicitly, I've purchased many products over the years from him.
