FIREPROOF - The new film from Sherwood Pictures

I wish I could make a movie for $500,000 and make so far $17 million. That is nothing to laugh about,,,

Let's be honest guys.... Kirk is a GREAT guy... he really is... if you ever get a chance to meet him you'll understand why, just a real guy, no pretense...

But... I really don't think he's a gifted dramatic actor. Within' the context of a film like Fireproof he's serviceable, but only because the supporting cast isn't very strong. Put Kirk into a film like The Dark Knight, or Body of Lies, or whatever and his acting ability will look even weaker.

Again nothing against Kirk... but he's just not a very good dramatic actor.

Kirk suffers from bad roles and questionable direction. I don't think anyone whose honest thinks Kirk is Denzel but he'll do in a pinch. He's also charming which gets him by, like - well - a child star. I'd like to see him in some horror flicks, like a Christian "Scream" type picture or something like "7th Heaven". He'd be perfect. In Chicago we used to have a Christian Soap Opera called "The Awakening" (or maybe is was Awakenings). It was very cheesy but amazingly popular, especially in the Black community. I remember catching a few episodes of it and thinking nothing about it. One day the cast was in the Bud Billiken Day parade and people almost lost their mind. Everybody was cheering and going off the deep end.

Yeah, I bet Hollywood's still freaking out.

Business plan-wise, I'd personally wish for The Blair Witch Project
(if you're talking about cashing in on a below-average to poor film)

Kirk should be compared to actors like Michael J. Fox. Even in that company he pales in comparison. And Michael J. Fox is no Denzel.

That kind of puts things into perspective.

Frankly I don't think Fox gets credit for his non-comedies. I saw "Causalities of War" and "Brightlights Big City." Fox is a good dramatic actor and held his own against Sean Penn of all people. (People forget about this). I do know a lot of dislike for Kirk has to do with his religion. Go on his IMDB forums and see what people are talking about? No one says "Cameron sucked as Mike Seaver" most of the post are mocking him for his faith and accusing him of being a con artist. It's all objective but Kirk is not the horrible actor people are trying to make him out to be, it's simply not so. By the way, Kirk is working and has a religious TV show called "Way of the Master". People want Kirk and his show to go away. They don't even watch the show to begin with and how often does he appear in anything?

Look at it like this, Keanu Reeves got acclaim for "Little Buddha" but overall the man is pretty wooden. He has a fan base but take martial arts from the Matrix and the famous "whoa" and try to make it work on Keanu Reeves acting alone and...I think people will see where I'm going with this. The talent around him made up for what he lacked and we liked him so we accepted him as Neo. So Reeves also is more about charm than talent.

Kirk's problems are due to lack of direction and miscasting. And now since so many people hate him those particular people will never see through the fact that he's a believer to see any real talent. But in the end the hate (I'll say the controversy) is only making him more popular. He shot up to the top 100 in the IMDB ranking. Sadly if he ever does anything really good the same people will say the same things. Which is common. People take everything so personally now days. He who whines the loudest I guess.

MJF was a great actor... I WISH HE COULD STILL BE THE PERFORMER HE WAS MEANT TO BE. GD disease. :(

Right. The money that the Chihuahua movie is making is laughable. :)

Come on, the budget for "Chihuahua" was much more than $500,000 and Fireproof made profit the first weekend. You talk as if 17,000,000 isn't a big deal. Fireproof just dropped to number 11 and ironically Religulous is right behind it at #12.

Glad I'm not the only one who see this.

That's my point! Maybe you guys missed this... "Kirk pales in comparison to MJF." I made the comparison since they both had long running TV shows. MJF made the transition to film seamlessly. He has acted with huge stars. Kirk... not so much. :)

Still, even MJF is no Denzel.

Cheers,

Mike

Stop twisting my words. Look again, I agreed with Zim!
I'm just laughing at the fact that Chihuahua is cleaning up.

A little defensive maybe?

Fox was a great actor...I don't think it's a fair comparison to Cameron.
I'd compare him (Kirk) to the kid from Alf or Mr. Belvedere first...

We all admit Kirk isn't great. But why pretend he's so bad? Maybe you really believe he is. If so, what exactly is Kirk doing so wrong in his acting? If you were directing Kirk what would you tell him? Judging from roles I'm seen him in he was okay.

You can't keep blaming different Director's as you have throughout this thread. Every actor has a certain 'range' to work within. The great ones have an unlimited range.

Kirk was best as a wisecracking teenager. He hit his peak a long time ago. My advice to Kirk, stay away from dramatic leading roles!

It's not his fault, he's just a so-so actor, not a great one.

Hollywood is not about to start making 500,000 dollar films. David Mamet once said, the dirty secret about Hollywood is that all films make money, it just depends on how close to the source of the money you are. Hollywood makes 185 million dollar movies, because that money flows INTO the studio. It doesn't vanish into a black hole. Producers get paid millions, actors get paid millions, directors get paid milliions, crew people get paid, well not millions, but a lot better than they would if they worked on a 500,000 dollar movie. If the movie doesn't make back its budget, guess what, the studio gets to write it off as a loss and with some creative accounting shift it over to a film that does. And the film that does will probably make a lot more than what Fireproof will end up making. No, the gross is nothing to sneeze at, but acting like it's a threat to Hollywood is kind of a joke.

Agreed. Movies make lots of money. And studios arent' hurting. Although the $500K movies making $20 Million is great for indies.

I understand this, I was just pointing out the fact that the money movie was making was buckwild for the budget.

Huh? Who have I blamed? I simply said he hasn't directed well. I didn't blame anyone specifically. Show me where I did. Honestly none of the movies he's done (including Left Behind) were from any noteable directors but I do believe he could be directed better.

Kirk was best as a wisecracking teenager. He hit his peak a long time ago. My advice to Kirk, stay away from dramatic leading roles!

I believe I specifically said (and think I have before) that Kirk is typically miscast and specifically added roles (look back at my last few post) he'd be good at. Bad direction + miscasting is bad for any actor. I'm just saying he isn't as bad an actor as being portray. It seems that lot of people to disagree with your take on Kirk. The fans (the people who pay the cash and keep coming back) seem to like him. It's all subjective anyway. (I'm sure this is the point where people will start to claim they know what everyone else should like).

Lol. I think that is the first time I have heard anyone cite Mr. Belvedere in a discussion. That kills me for some reason.
