I have to upload a corporate video by tomorrow and No matter how I convert the video it wont play on their ECS system. I am working on a Mac and they are PC. They are using Windows media player 11 with all default codecs. Basically he told me the AVI I sent him was not readable by media player. What can I do to for my files to play on media player. I need some help on this one.

Hi,

What are the requirements of the file - the specifications?

Is is only to be played on the computer - a PC?

What kind of bit rate?

The 'avi' extension is only a wrapper for a CODEC, you might have used a CODEC that is not on their system.

MPEG is a good choice as is WMV MOV might be, but Mac to PC might have some QT switches that you might want to steer clear of.

A lot depends upon what they intend to do with the file. If it is going to go to a DVD, send them a MPEG2 muxed with a PCM audio file. If it is only on PCs, do a Windows media, if it is going on shared computers with low bit rates, punt and make it a 2000 Kbps MPEG1 file.

My best,

Mike

Thanks. Basically we have flat screen Monitors around the building and they play original content. Pictures, inspirational messages, goals, safety info etc. basically they are electronic posters that are capable of playing video. The only files it will play are MPEG, .MP3, MPG, and AVI. we Upload to them ant it plays. but I don't know what to do. I have a 100mb per file limit and I could cut the video into pieces, but again it is coming off a mac and I won't be sure it will play on their media player since they have only the default codecs.
Is there a converter I could download or am I not looking at this the right way? the thing is, it still needs to be the decent quality. The h.264 file looks great but .MOV is not an option. Man this is killing me.

I wish a mod would sticky this thread:

When dealing with windows PC's you'll find that Windows Media is supported all of the time.

There are differences between containers, and codecs. AVI is a container, while Mpeg-4 is a codec. Codecs can go inside containers. The system has to be able to break apart the container, and then it must be able to have the correct codec to play back the data.

Just because its an AVI, doesn't mean the PC has the correct codec installed to play back the video.

Windows Media Simplifies things for you, since WMV Container is understood by all windows pcs (Windows 2000 and up), and most of the codecs are built into the PCs and/or will auto download when needed.

Windows XP SP1 will have all of the codecs for Windows Media 9 pre-installed

Try creating a 2-pass VBR VC-1 file around 1500K/s, with WM9.2 audio around 192K for your presentation. It should play back fine in most instances up to 640x480. Frame sizes larger may require beefer hardware to play back at full speed.

you'll probably need some pro encoding tools to create decent quality wmv files on a mac... sorenson queeze, or does flip4mac put out decent quality?

consider backing up whatever you do with some decent two-pass mpeg files, as was previously suggested.

If you can bootcamp into windows, there are free utilities to make Windows Media files.

Otherwise get ready to cough up $200+ for a VC-1 encoder (wmv)
