David Blaine and the Dive of Death

That was lame. I dig his street magic show thats years old now but some of his recent stunts have been kinda stupid.

I thought Bruce Leroy was the only person to catch a bullet in his teeth? :)

Yes I totally agree, I remember those ones, they were amazing, all these new crazy stunts are not half as impressive as the street magic.

David, go back to your roots.

Yeah, I think he wanted to jump without it looking like it was bungee'd and then walk onto the stage, without it looking like he was strung up. Which is why it was at night.
Might have been cooler if he jumped and when he got close to the stage he just vanished. and then reappeared somewhere like behind the crowd.

Again, I was at the bullet catch segment while it was filmed. My friend is Carl Skenes who was Blaine's consultant on the trick. They shot the footage on two Phantom cams, filming at 10,000fps. No CGI. I was there. He caught a bullet in his mouth. The reason he said it was an ILLUSION was so some stupid kids don't go out there and try it on their own.

I think he was going to jump and then be pulled up into the air as the strobe hit (vanishing completely) He was not pulled up and instead hung there feeling lame.

I have to say - having just watched that YouTube clip....if that was actually the way the stunt was supposed to go, it was an incredibly lame and confusing stunt.

It's not even clear what is supposed to happen - Blaine looks utterly confused and awkward....
And I'm not sure since when pulling someone out of frame and out the lights into pitch blackness is equal to 'disap[earing into the atmosphere.'

EDITED TO ADD:
Just saw an AP wire article about it.
They ended the article with:
"He celebrated the completion of the wire act Wednesday night by diving from a platform 44 feet to the ground while attached to a harness."
No mention of a big finale, him 'disappearing' or anything other than the hanging upside down, and the bullet catch.

Yeah, that definitely didn't go as planned.

Z

My DVX brother.

Think about the words that are coming out of your mouth. Just for a second.

Just read this:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080925/ap_en_tv/people_david_blaine;_ylt=Apj13Z5Iaq_DXUYLpC90JnBX24cA

"Blaine said his grand finale of diving from a platform 44 feet to the ground while attached to a harness didn't go according to plan.
He was supposed to jump and, at 10 feet, be swept away by a bunch of helium-filled balloons."

......

"Blaine added: "I know that it didn't work right when all my friends called up and said, `Wait, what happened? I'm confused.'

So apparently we aren't the only ones who were disappointed with that stunt.
:)

I will once again toss my hat in the fray: it didn't happen. You were right when you called it an illusion (and not just for the reason you gave) Blaine is not a magician, he is just some guy in LA who gets drunk and...oh, wait...not that Blaine.* DAVID Blaine is just an illusionist. He tricks the audience into believing something that didn't happen.

*Sorry, Blaine, I couldn't resist. :(

Last I heard was the average human respone time was 10ms to react to something.
Pretty slow compared to the speed of a bullet. And... teeth will not stop a bullet. That's why they make vests and helmets and armoured humV's.

Was this an attempt at humor?

Watch the event back on youtube. What david did can be done. It is stupid but can be done. If he had that heavy steel cup in his mouth blocked by the contraption behind it, it is possible a 22 bullet would not penetrate it, but be stopped. Shoot a 22 at a steel plate and you will see it does not go through but bounces off, just like the bullet does in the slow mo Blaine catch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngu5e_wS26k

Don't know if he really did it, but just saying it is possible to do it the way he did it.

Then there was Chung Ling Soo:
The trick went tragically wrong when Soo was performing in the Wood Green Empire, London, on March 23, 1918. Soo never cleaned the gun properly. Over time, the gap that allowed the bullet to drop out of the barrel into the chamber slowly built up a residue from the continued burning of gunpowder. On the fateful night of the accident, the bullet remained in the barrel and was fired in the normal way, hitting Soo in the chest. His last words were spoken on stage that moment, "Oh my God. Something's happened. Lower the curtain."

D'OUGH!
