if I had extra money I might look at the Nikons but if I had extra extra money it look at real film lenses. I really love the Contax Zeiss.

willis i've been following your posts on the c/y lenses and your work with kholi on the short. he mentions you have a nice set put together.

i'm rounding one out, and i'm curious if you've ever used any of the long lenses - the 200 or the 300. i know stop doesn't make these lenses terribly attractive, but shooting outside shouldn't present a problem at a 3.5 or 4.

i'm shooting a doc in japan in november and am thinking of taking one or the other along. if you've used them, anything you can share about them? vignetting? difficulty mounting / support, etc?

on the other end, have you shot the 18/4? is it functional given it's speed?

i guess i should mention i'm shooting the 200 with the ultimate, although by the time we travel that will have switched to the 170.

davetronic,
I have yet to use the 200, 300, and 18. I was considering the 16 f/2.8, but it's fisheye, so I'm reconsidering it. If it's outdoor, you are fine with the slower aperture, and if you're on an ultimate, even better, you can stop down past 5.6. Longest lens I have is 180mm f/2.8, and as of now, I've used it once, they're all great, except for my 25 f/2.8 (soft edges), i recently acquired a 28 f/2, a lot better.

I know i didn't answer any of your questions, but... I'm sure the 200/300 is good for outdoor broad daylight, and if you can live with the slow aperture on the 18, you're golden.

thanks willis. i may end up just pushing in on the HVX zoom in order to get out there a bit farther, although it would be nice to have the reach of the 200. i think after doing some research, the longest i'll go for is the 135.

and maybe the 18 for a wide, since there aren't a lot of great options outside biting the price of the 21mm.

There are two frustratin' things about the ZF's:

No Zoom
No Telephoto Longer than 100

=T I've been tryin' to decide whether to stay Contax and just get all the faster ones, sell off the slower ones or not. It's been a tough decision.

i considered the ZF's before going for the C/Y's. both the things you mention came up for me - and that they are more expensive for basically the same lens. and then there's the fact they don't rotate cine style, which was the element that just added one more curve ball to deal with. even though there are solutions for that when it matters.

i love the idea of having new glass, but i've also had great success finding the fast C/Y lenses in fantastic condition. i just picked up the 28/2 and a 50/1.4... combined with the 85/1.4 and 100/2 i'm just lacking the 35/1.4. after having tested the 28, i can say with some confidence i'm going to want the extra stop in the 35 on the next job (rather than just pushing in on the 28 to get to a 35). i found this a little surprising, especially since there's very little stop difference as you close down from wide open on these lenses with an adapter. but if i can get off the wide and into a better spot on the lens earlier, all the better. i shot the 85mm at a 2.8 - 4 split and 3.4 on the HVX and felt pretty good about it (keying with a 2k).

i know you've been shooting the 28-70, right? what's your experience been with the zoom? given we can push all the way in on the ultimate, is there any big gain to going that route rather than just mounting a 28 or 35 and pushing in (other than the lack of change in DOF doing the latter)? i haven't determined an equivalent focal length when doing that yet to see what gives more reach or what that does to FOV. have you? obviously even with the loss of stop on the long end of the HVX, you're still getting more light than on the f3.5 zoom...

I use Zeiss/Zeiss and a Nikon/Zeiss adapter on the LEX. :D

I got Zeiss Medium format lenses (those are huge but beautyfull glass - almost the same size and weight of the LEX) with a Zeiss/Exakta bajonett bolted via Zeiss/Nikkon adapter to a LEX with Nikon mount. (see pictures)

The 35 f/1.4 is a fantastic lens, a must-get. keh has one now for hella cheap, but it's at BGN.

yeah, and i'm a little skeptical of the KEH rating system. i recently purchased a "LN-" 35/1.4 only to find the focus ring had some stiff hitches in it, likely from having taken a hit at some point.

i'm still looking for that one.

zeiss/zeiss? please do explain... dang, the nikons/zeiss are dominating =/ thought there'd be more C/Y users

I'm collecting C/Y lenses before I get the Ultimate. I have a 28mm/f2, 85mm f1.4, 28-85, 60mm, Mutar II, extension tubes and a 100mm. I want to get some of the more exotic f1.2's but it's a cat and mouse game on eBay to get a bargain. I think the lenses are superior to the Nikon. Most of the C/Y's have a 270 degree focus turn in the same direction as cine/pro video lenses, which is great.
