Which matte bow for those prime lenses?

Hi,

I've got some Canon FD primes. The standard filter size is 52mm, but I have an 85mm that has a 72mm filter size. I was also thinking about getting a 300mm which has an even bigger glass.
So, instead of buying circular filters for each one of them, I think it would be "cheaper" to get a mattebox that I could use with any lens, right?

The question is: is there a mattebox big enough for those 300mm lenses?
Which one do you recommend? (oh, did I mention I have a limited budget?)

I use FD primes, and I use the Redrock mattebox. Its brilliant, its not cheaper than an indian knockoff or one of the cheap stamped out formatt matteboxes, but it will take huge lenses, ive used it with massive cine lenses, and the swing away thing is brilliant.

Its a long lead time, so order as soon as you can.

Thanks, I think I'll go for that one. It's quite affordable. Only problem is I'll have to find some filters. I checked Tiffen's website. Man! Three or four filters will cost the same price as the Redrock matte box!

Yes, it's $495. That's not really cheap, but you get a ND, ND grad and polarizer, which is a good starter set.
Any idea where I can find cheaper? Or used?

Cavision make a set of five 4x4 filters for $200. Must be made of caravan windows for that price but its a start..

Indeed, I heard the Cavision filters were not so good.
Schneider have a five filter set for $499... Maybe I'll go for that one...

Just figured something out!
4"x4" is approx 10cmx10cm.
The canon 300mm f2.8 has a 127cm glass (5").

Will I get some vignetting?
I guess I won't with a 4x5.65 filter, in most cases. But what if I rotate the Polarizer?

Not even our mattebox will fit with a canon f2.8 300mm. It's got a very large exit face that is too large for any mattebox using 4x4 or 4x6.5 filters. We've had the 300mm f2.8 and the 500mm f4 on the Brevis rig which not only would require very long rails (over 80cm) to get the box out in front...but as you've figured, neither would come close to fitting any of the 4" format boxes out there. There's a few pics here: http://cinevate.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1297 of that rig.

Google for "KOOD Pro 100 Series" filters. I had great results from them.

Not as good as my Tiffens but for a fraction of price it´s a good start

As far as I know they are made in England, but should be aviable in the US also.
I got 2 ND grads from Kood and I like them, I don´t know if they make polarizers.

Got mine from here: http://www.crookedimaging.co.uk/sho...Q&itemsubtype=Kood&itemsubsubtype=ZSeriesFilt

You canlso lokk into Lee Filters.

Thanks,
I'm not sure this answers my question, though... I guess these filters are 4x4. That is too small for the 300mm lens, I think.
