Anyone who recently BUILT a PP System?

Purchased HVX200 Last Month.

Editing HD on old system is painful.

Looking to build a new NLE.

Wintel only, thank you.

I would like to take advantage of Elemental Technology's RapiHD Rendering Accelerator when it is released by using an nVidia GTX card. (Still doing research on this.)

I would also like to add a card for monitoring HD on an HD flat panel TV via component out.

Any suggestions from someone who has experience?

It does not seem that that card will provide monitoring of DVCPROHD from the timeline without rendering... only HDV or uncompressed.

"Intensity is the highest quality editing solution for Adobe Premiere Pro, and because it's fully compatible, you get a compete solution with nothing extra to buy. Play out through the HDMI video output using 8 and 10 bit uncompressed AVI and QuickTime™ files, HDV, Motion JPEG and DV files, as well as 32 bit TARGA and BMP image sequences, which can all be played back on the same Premiere Pro timeline without rendering."

The Intensity card drivers will install presets into PP; when you use those, any footage you put on the timeline (including P2 stuff) will be sent to the monitor. The presets can be tweaked (a bit).

A good video card is a big help, because Premiere can use the card for acceleration.

Good video card

Good video card

Thanks for the advice all. Just wondering what a good video card, as mentioned in the previous post, would be.

I'm looking at a 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT.

Any opinions or that or its ilk?

Thanks again.

What's good about that card is the HDMI port. You could actually use it to preview to your HD monitor; PP uses the card for acceleration, so it could be a good way to go.

It'll run kinda hot and it's very, very big, so make sure you have a big box to put it in. Also, it'll cover at least one of your other expansion slots on your mobo. Have a plan in mind. Make sure, too, that your power supply has the correct plugs.

Thanks, David. That's super helpful to know. I just discovered these boards, and man, with people like you on them, they are very very useful.

Thanks again.

According to the Premiere CS3 site regarding GPU Acceleration (CS4 releases tomorrow):

Avoid Nvidia cards together with Black Magic - bin there, done that, got a Radeon - problems solved.

A quad intel CPU on a intel ddr3 board in a 19" housing - 4 gigs of ddr3 ram - XP with the 3 gig switch - a view TB of fast raid system for video, nothing else on the computer than CS3 (Premiere/Photoshop/After Effects) and no physical connection to the internet (other than for updates) does a perfect job for me.

I prefer dedicated NLE sysstems and everything else on cheaper - of the shelf - machines.

Here is a system I built for less than $1000 recently to post an entire movie:

1) Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.0 GHZ
2) 4 Gigs of Ram
3) Asus P5e-VM HDMI
4) Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS
5) 2x WD 750GB Drives (The caviar Blacks are slightly better now)
6) Micro ATX Case
7) SATA --> ESATA bracket to plug into the board. Now you have ESATA ports
8) Vista64 Business

The system is very small, portible, and is a powerhouse when it comes to doing any work. We overcame lots of memory issues we were running into while editing on a machine with 2gb of ram on XP32. The new system allowed us to finish the project without having to split it into two different project files.

We did HD output from the second DVI port on the video card. You can also do component output. No need to drop extra cash on the Black Magic card unless you need multiple outputs, or some sort of live passthrough of HDMI.

You would still need some ASIO based sound card to hear a surround sound mix, so I would reccomend an Edirol FA-101 since it is totally vista-64 certified and is solid on that OS.

P.S. If you are going to do any real complex work in Adobe Encore, forget it. Just send it over to a friend who has DVD Studio Pro on a mac, or go for something higher end like Sonic Scenerist. ENCORE is BUGGY as hell. Premiere Pro and After Effects on the other hand are solid.
