Cinemek's g35 adapter shipping june 20th!

Hey Jon, Just wondering if people can visit for a demo and if there is a EOS mount in the works (C/Y would be even better)? Looking good!

I'm Working on setting up some demos at Seattle, Vancouver, Portland rental houses. The EOS lens mounts are next up. There has been lots of demand for them and we expect to have them available by the end of October.

Jon, what is the widest lens you can use with the G35?
or what was the widest lens you used on "How Low?"
some shots were dark at the edges but are they showing any vignetting?

Will the bayonet mount for the HVX200 fit the HPX170? I know the thread size has changed from 82mm to 72mm, but I am unsure of whether accessories for the bayonet will be compatible.

dcarstens,
I'd think they'd come out with a new bayonet for the HPX-170. Otherwise your step-down rings from 82mm to 72mm might get stuck inside the bayonet for the HVX.

I used a 14mm on the shot with his foot large in frame. That lens actually vignettes on film, so it's no surprise that there is vignetting on the actual footage. I commonly use a sigma (pretty junky) 20mm without vignetting. How low was shot late in the day in the mid of winter so yes I was pushing that HVX (Non A) to it's limits. also was using a 2.8 zoom mostly.

From the photos I have seen as well as the 72mm front I'm betting the HPX is actually the same setup as the DVX bayonet mount. So the DVX mount should work on the HPX but I'm working on confirming that. It would make sense form a manufacturing standpoint for Panasonic to keep it the same. In that case we would have HPX mounts on hand now.

Jonathan,

this might have been answered before, but can you stop down to say f4-f8 and not see static grain in blue skys and clouds?

and do you know the roll-off point for the level of brightness effected by opening the taking lens's aperture?

for example:

when opening the lens from f8 to f5.6 the brightness might increase apox 1 stop. but when opening the the lens from f2 to f1.4 the brightness might only increase 1/10th a stop.

reportedly the roll-off for the brevisCF1 is around f4 (from memory)
and my SGpro's roll-off is at f2.

have you done tests for this stuff?

thanks

I will be uploading HD stop down footage tomorrow with F-stops indicated as that is the best way to show how the G35 deal with stopping down. As for the roll off, the reason those other units are not affected when you open the lens all the way is because they have a narrow scattering angle. This is done to gain light by using a shaped diffuser. The downsides to this is that the light does not get scattered to the edge of the clear aperture of your lens resulting in a "blurry" bokeh or a hot spot in in the middle your blur circles. The G35 increases it's light gain in accordance to the lens. So there is no roll-off.

Jonathan,

I'm deeply happy to check out you're alive and kicking -- as well, the best 35mm adapter ever!

All my best as usual,
Emanuel :-)

i suspect that all adapters have a roll off unless they have a 100% opaque GG. it's just that maybe the G35's roll off is past the f1.4 mark... so we cant see it unless we get one of those fancy f0.7 lenses Kubrick used.

looking forward to seeing the footage.

I'm pretty impressed with the footage I've seen so far. I'll be buying an a1 soon after i sell my current camera and will be looking for a 35mm adapter in the not too distant future. I hope by then you'll have created a pentax k-mount as i have a stack of quality pentax and old takumar lenses. I don't use anything else in photography and hope to be using these lenses on the g35. Up until I have found your adapter the only adapter I was thinking of getting was the brevis as it seems compact and the stillmotion footage really sold me more than the tons of other short films and music videos I've seen out for all the other adapters. But theres something very filmic that comes through on everything shot with the g35 despite whether it is naturally lit or not. The softness that others have pointed out I actually quite like. I can still see strands of hair but theres this subtle dreamy character about the footage thats very subtle but very appealing to me. Plus theres no batteries and all that that makes it that extra bit appealing.

Im looking forward to seeing some HVX footage soon. I am on the fence right now. Need just alittle more. I am in love with the idea of this static adapter. I have gone from the M2 to the extreme, and worked on the SGpro, and am very curious about this adapter, and the simplicity of it. I did notice the very slight change in color temp on the fish tank clip, but I'm sure alot of factor can come into play in regarding something like that. Look forward to seeing some great hvx200 footage.

Jonathan,

How about enlisting some beta testers to try it out on different cameras.

You can create the protocol (I'm sure folks here would give you great input) and some of us here can test it out on various cameras.

This surely will help define the adapter's abilities and help you establish it in the market place.
