I am planning on releasing two movies...one in early december, which will be a bmx vid---the next august 2009 which will be a ski-snowboard movie combined----I dont know if its to late to get music for the bmx vid-we just started the shooting today lol. So do i contact the producer or what? I made a selection of music id like to use for both the bmx video and the winter video---We are almost all set up to air the bmx one at the local theatre and plan to sell copies.. Soooo Help from anyone who as put together action sports videos and had to get rights for their music! thanks...most the bands are low key btw....

Music rights are like Russia to Churchill "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma."

You have to clear rights with the copyright holder, the performer and the composer...can be very expensive. You can find more details here:

http://www.britfilms.com/resources/music/ (information will apply worldwide).

find out who the publisher is, find out who the record company is. that is all you need to do. clear rights with them and you're golden. the written composition rights are usually held by the publisher. the recording rights by the record company.

You need something to cover the written composition, and the recorded version. Master, sync, performance rights are what you want. if you want to make a cd soundtrack then get mechanical rights as well...

You have to go to Ascap and BMI and find out who are the holders of the rights. Sometimes you will have more than one but they will all be listed on the sites. I was trying to get a Rhianna song and like 5 people had rights and each wanted their cut. :P
