Be careful what you wish for.... HDTV

Man, shooting in HD isn't always all that much better....
My wife and I are sitting here watching 'Fringe' on FOX right now.
Well, she's watching it, and I'm reading the forums....

Suddenly I hear her say "wow, if you're going to do a closeup on the guy at least use an actor with a real beard...especially in HD"

I look up to see a closeup on an 'old' man in a prison.
The HD image is so crisp that we can see the netting under his fake moustache and beard.

Awesome.

Quick followup for you....

very next scene the guy was clean shaven.
So I guess the beard didn't seem all that important....

...except for the fact that it was the guy's introductory scene on the show.

Just goes to show you...no detail is too small.
Especially when shooting and mastering HD.

We had Fox HD from Time Warner/ Brighthouse. Down here they have commercials which slam the Dish companies, saying "The Dishes lose their signal in our little Florida Sun Showers...", which is hilarious to me. We would lose the Brighthouse signal on beautiful Sunny days for no reason. Half the time it was like trying to watch streaming video on a dial up connection. And that was the least of our problems with them!

was it like this vivid? WARNiNG HUGE:

Yeah, we don't have cable....
We get all the local stations and networks in HD.
(except for PBS unfortunately, who quit broadcasting in HD here a few months ago)

I have Dish and we get a lot of channels in HD but not the networks. At least, I don't think. They don't display in wide screen 1080 at least. Maybe it's because I live in the middle of nowhere...

This sort of thing has been going on for quite a while. CSI in its infancy was known for having bad makeup on the dead bodies, bodies that could be seen breathing, etc.

They have gotten much better at it as the years rolled by.
I'm sure other shows will learn from them as they enter the HD arena.

Haha. :) Now, how the :furious3: are you getting FOX in HD!? What service do you have?

Both FOX and ABC are 720p; CBS and NBC are 1080i.
PBS will be either 720p or 1080i, depending on the station.

All the major stations in all the major cities are sending HD over the air. I was surprised to hear the other day that even the small stations, like KLEW, Lewiston Idaho, that serves about 165,000 people is now doing an HD feed over it's transmitter.

My questions are; are you on cable or satellite? Also, why hasn't your service provider offered FOX in HD? Most likely it's in HD over the air in your area.

By the way, this story helps to show, that even in 720p mode, HD can show too much detail.

Bob, I am on Dish. I have a large amount of HD channels that I can view on my 1080p TV but FOX is not one of them. Perhaps it's because my local FOX affiliate has not offered it yet. I notice on some networks it says "Broadcast in HD where available" but I am not viewing in wide screen mode. Also, the local ABC says they are in HD and this is possible but it is still not WS.

I read an article were Tina Fey was asked about the SNL transition to HD and she said

"I hate HD It makes me look like a Frankenstein raped a Dracula"

Thats Funny, but I know a lot of on camera talent that is not thrilled about having that HD detail engine pointed at their face.

We just got Direct dish yesterday in HD. Until the HD DVR died, it was nice. There is even a format button that allows you to choose different varieties of 1080i, 720, and even 480i.

Our Time Warner service is very good - this from a former DirecTV fanboy. When DirecTV couldn't figure out how to install their own HD systems, we decided to jump. Never looked back.

We have all the networks in HD - way up in the 250s, but they're there. Also, HDOnDemand is awesome. I skip MadMen on AMC and catch it on HDShowcase the next day in all its HD glory.

Crap. That CSI: Miami show makes my monitor look like the bomb. How do they cram all that color in there? Can't be broadcast legal. Can't be!!!

It's not exactly a dream come true for my department, either. Everything has to be finished differently, for HD. At least, if you want to avoid your sets looking like freeze-dried reheated crap.
