Filming Short Independent Documentary in France

Hello all,

I work in the film industry but I am a first time filmmaker filming a documentary about lack of handicap accomodations in Paris this November. I have no budget so I am really just trying to film a doc short that I hope to show maybe at a shorts festival, etc.. Do I need to get permits as I will be filming around National Monumnets in Paris (but with a small DV cam ...and I realy will also be a tourist) and releases for each person interviewed. If I have to then I will, I am just wondering for a scope this small is this all necessary.

Thanks for any advice you guys can share!

You really don't since this won't air anywhere but it's a good chance to run through the entire cycle of how it's done so you should make every attept...at least with the releases. I don't see you aquiring permits for this and honestly it'll just make them aware of whats going on. I'd skip the permit part. I do not spend time getting them in my professional life as it simply limits shots too much.

I've just come back from France and spent most of my time "poking my HVX200" around the excellent open air food markets and on the whole had not one problem. Not sure about the interview stuff but would suggest getting releases "just in case".
good luck and have fun!

Indy....

As long as you are in public places there shouldn´t be a problem, just watch out for public events that could be media sensitive.
And of course plan your shots in advance and only when you have everything worked out, take out your camera...

Just an idea: you might want to contact some French association of handicapped people. They could probably indicate you good places to film and might even help you to get your film shown somewhere.
