this is something I haven't found a lot of info on...i'm producing a surf film going to dvd very soon here and when adjusting the levels to the 0-100ire standard sometimes adjusting the blacks to 0 IRE can cause the image to look a bit washed out.....can i get away with having the black levels below 0IRE or will that cause clipping or interference with the audio??

cheers,

are you monitoring the footage on a broadcast monitor or just the canvas window?

FYI, you cannot accurately judge color on a computer monitor (this applies to both FCP and Color).

i know, i have a tv setup and properly calibrated, but if the black levels are below 0IRE what problems (if any) will arise???

How exactly are you getting the signal out of FCP and onto the TV? It sounds odd that your blacks are at 0 yet still look milky. You might be experiencing a problem related to different black levels being used by different devices (0 IRE vs 7.5 IRE). As far as any adverse effects of going below 0 IRE, I'm not sure.

i have a video card with an analog output, which runs into my tv. Even on DVD on hi-def tv's it looks a bit washed out, the problem was that a lot of my footage of surfing was underexposed and needed to have the blacks upped to 0, resulting in a color loss and washed out-not so sharp looking footage.
