Indie film

Yeah, Aram, both of those have been posted somewhere around here, but they are worth revisiting. They are among the things that have my head in a spin about my next project.

It just reinforces that you have be in this for the passion and if you work hard enough good things will happen. At least thats what I'm trying to keep in my head cause this is the last career that I ever want to have. It took me 40 years to finally find something that keeps a woody in my pants besides Marks hair.

I subscribe to Stacey Parks' site and got this in my inbox today:

Hi everyone,

Wow, we got such an outpouring of emails last week over an
article that was published in the Wall St. Journal called
"Glut Of Films Hits Hollywood". My first impression was - I
can't believe so many of you are WSJ readers like me! (I'm a
loyal reader for 15 years) But seriously, I think seeing
what I've been preaching for a while now, make it to the mass
media like that, really hit home for a lot of you.

That article is in tandem with the now-famous "The Sky Is Falling"
speech that Mark Gill gave at the LA Film Festival, and which
has since been published by Indie Wire and others...

So what's the bottom line here you ask?

Bottom line is this -- there's too many dang films being released
in theaters right now, and thus it's almost impossible for an
indie to 'break out of the pack' and get noticed...enough so that
they don't get pulled from theater after one showing.

What both Mark Gill and the WSJ writers are saying all boils
down to that fact. Period. So it's not necessarily that the films
that aren't getting noticed are bad, there's just too many other
films vying for attention from people. There's too many distractions
in general out there that the climate is literally ALMOST impossible
right now to release an indie in theaters - either by yourself
OR through a distributor.(why do you think theatrical
distributors in Toronto right now are scared to death to pick
up even the best films?)

Now, the reason I say ALMOST impossible is because I believe
there are exceptions. And as always, I want to focus on SOLUTIONS
for you all, rather than join the chorus of naysayers.

So for Film Specific members this week there's an Audio Lesson
on "Weathering The Storm". Times may be tough, and the market
may be in the doldrums, but let's talk about things we can actually
do to thrive at a time like this no matter what. In this piece
I give some solid solutions, and am opening it up for discussion
in the Forums. Film Specific members can access it here:

AND something free for everyone - there's a wonderful case study
this week, a real Do-It-Yourself Packaging success story - about
a filmmaker who worked with me to create a list of 'bankable'
cast for his small indie film, and in just a few weeks has gone
from 'just another guy with a script' to 'packaged and ready to
go to AFM and raise financing'. Listen to his inspiring story
right here:

And for those of you just rolling in from summer holidays,
we've got a lot programmed over the next couple months here at
Film Specific. Take a look at all our upcoming events:

Alright everyone - remember, despite what all the media is saying
(which is true), there's always solutions so let's stay focused
on that and weather this storm, rather than sit in the rain and
get drenched.

Talk to you soon!

To your success,
Stacey*
