Large HD monitor for location shooting

Today I was trying to find any topics dealing with adapting HD capable computer monitors for use on location.

The trick is having screens that are larger than 17" and have at least component inputs that would allow HD images from HDV cameras or better.

Can anyone tell us on what worked for you?

You can get almost any computer monitor you want and add a blackmagic sdi-hdmi converter. Or for component there is an adapter called "mayflash" or something.

Blackmagic has a converter to go from component to SDI, but to get HD monitoring that output would have to be HDMI at least.

About the Mayflash adapter, I couldn't find the right one, and I think there were some problem stories with Mayflash adapters mentioned on this forum.

What I am talking about is connecting an HDV camera, or an HXV200, to a monitor like this one:

You might just want to go for a 22" TV from Visio for $350 at Costco. Otherwise I think Dell makes some monitors with component connections.

The question is how good, accurate and useful are the images you get on lower cost monitors, particularly in HD.

I alredy use a Philips 10" DVD player, which is quite good. But is not accurate enough to judge the lighting of a scene.

A professional monitor will be above $3,000, so I wonder how close we can get to it with a lower budget.

I use a 24" full HD Gateway Computer Monitor on my dollys

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=146290

It got YV,2 x component and composit, HDMI (and of course) computer inputs, so I can connect the HVX component signal to it without any extra box.

It was 350 on Ebay (refurbished).
Not what I would use for color correction, ( flat panels suck at CC anyways) but nice, sharp and bright picture.
Really love to work with it, since I hate view finders.

Compared it to the extreme expensive Sony field monitor that only has half HD resolution at 17".

The Sony seems to have a bit wieder garmut and a bit exacter color, but the sharpness and resoluttion on the Gateway is way better. Just for checking focus and light the Gateway is the better bet with the better price in my opinion.
And it also has got a 12V input - so you are not tied to a wall socket.

It certainly looks the works!

In my case I would be connecting a Sony Z1, but I am interested in using it for higher resolution HD systems, like Cinealta and else.

Even the new Luma series?

Lighting, focus and framing are the ones I am mostly interested in.

The only models I could find that might compare to this Gateway are some Dell types, like the 2408 and 2709. Have you tried or compared any of them to the Gateway?

The Gateway 24" I found can only be powered by AC, though it does provide a 12V DC output. You can feed your Gateway through 12 VDC direct? In my case I was thinking of using an inverter, to power it off car batteries, but not straight in. The only large model I found which can be fed from DC is the Mac, which take 24VDC.

I think it was on the first profesional HD Fieldmonitors from Sony, can´t remember the type.

The Gateway I got is called: GATEWAY 2485W

Here is the inputs

It`s got about the same specs like the Dell but in a nicer housing.

I think they use at least the same panel like Dell : LTM240M2 S-PVA PANEL .

And you are right, it´s a 12V out. Never actualy used it but it looks like a female in, so I thought it is a input.

I have been searching around to find some info on the Gateway and other options. Also looking for availability, as I would have to buy this monitor from Brazil, so shipping and else are very important.

There was an Anandtech article comparing some 24" LCD monitors:

http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3302&p=1

The chosen one, even if not perfect due to higher input lag, was the Dell 2408WFP. And Dell seems to be more available over here than Gateway, which would not allow me a direct comparison between them plugging my Sony Z1.

The Gateway FHD2400 seems to have some seeping light problems, but that seems to be apparent in dark environments, which should not be the case in location shootings.
