Working with Progressive material in an HDV timeline?

Hello,

I am editing in a project in a 50i HDV timeline and just got a bunch of footage shot with the Canon HV20 which records 24p inside of a 60i signal. The footage has been captured to the 60i HDV codec and awaits transcoding in nessesary.

Should I try to work with all the 60i footage in the 50i timeline or should I transcode the 60i HDV to 24p and use those files?

If so what codec should I transcode to?

I was hoping to keep everything HDV, is there a 24p HDV codec that I can transcode to in Compressor?

Thanks :)

Can anyone help me out with this?

If my timeline is Pal 50i HDV, will NTSC 24p footage work properly in that timeline?
or
Should I transcode all the 50i to 24p and just work NTSC?

Bump!

Can anyone give me any insight here? I've never had to bump a question twice.

I know it sounds like a mess but...

...all I really need to know if I am working with a majority of 50i footage and I have 24p material to integrate... Is it worth converting all of the 50i to 24p just to avoid having to generate false frames?

Or should I just convert the 24p to 50i??

Your cleanest option is to go to 24 with the canon footage. Good luck, it will not be easy because it was shot on canon. Then convert the 24 to 25 and leave it at that.

thanks captain,

So transcode 2x once to 24p then to 25p and use the 25p in the 50i timeline?

That makes sense.

My only problem after that is having to go from the 50i master back to a 24p NTSC dvd for release in the US. Will all those transcodes lead to garbage looking footage for all the canon stuff??

I assume so, but?

Or does it make the most sense, even though I don't want to do it, to convert all of the 50i to 24p?

That way none of the footage gets transoded twice.

If so would it be smart to transcode the HDV 50i material to the HDV 24p codec instead of something like ProRes?

Should I trust Compressor with any transcoding from PAL to NTSC or visa vera?

I was hoping someone already had experience being in a similar situation so I didn't have to make a costly mistake.

But whenever there is a posting about PAL to NTSC related issues nobody reply's.

There has got to be someone who can tell me if its better to convert all my PAL to NTSC 24p or convert my 24p to 25p if I eventually want to end up with an NTSC 24p master?
