Chance of an AVCHD SDI/HDMI Recorder?

Hello,

I don't know if this is the correct forum, but I here it goes.

With the Convergent Designs Flash XDR and the Sony & JVC HDV CF rcorders out or coming out, what is the chance of a Panasonic CD or SD card recorder using AVCHD at a higher bitrate like 50mbps and using a 4:2:2 color space?

Is this a dream as it would canniblize P2, or would it be seen a viable product along side P2?

Just wondering...

Cineform is coming out eventually with an HDMI recorder that records their codec to CF cards, and has a USB port to record to a laptop drive as well. Supposedly SDI and component may follow.

As far as AVCHD, not likely to happen. The highest bitrate possible is supposed to be 25mbps I'm told. I imagine they could do like Sony and make a proprietary variation that records at 50mbps... but there wouldn't be much of a point since they have P2/DVCProHD

Thanks for your reply.

I was thinking that AVC was a better/newer codec than DVCProHD as users of the HPX-2000/3000 have stated.

These two cameras have a higher bitrate version that is intra-frame as well.

I think it could be a way for people to record for longer periods of time who own P2 equipment, and another thing to sell.

According to the AVCHD Information website, the maximum System Bit Rate is "~24Mbps." So you will never see an officially supported version of AVCHD higher than that. Click here to read the full specs.

There may be third-party specialty codecs forthcoming using a similar compression approach at higher bandwidth. AVC Intra is a very interesting variant in that it is not GOP and thus not so processor-intensive (AVCHD's major downfall).

Well bandwidth comes into play. That's why they use P2 cards, becaause they are lot faster. It may be possible to use 2 or more SDHC cards together to achieve similar performance. That is essentially what P2 cards are: several memory chips configured as a RAID.
