Canon 24f capture by Vegas 7?

OK, I've heard yes's and no's all over the place and I need an educated and explained answer.
I have footage shot in 1080 24f Canon, on an XH-A1. I want to capture directly into Vegas, is this possible? If so I'd really like to talk to someone who has literally done it themselves.
I've just gotten some many different answers I need to be sure. I need to borrow a camera to do this and don't want to waste my time ..... long story why.

It is possible. I haven't done it, but it's supported. And it works even better with the updated m2t codec that Sony publicly tested a few weeks ago.
 
yes, it will capture fine directly into vegas 7. i know because i own an xh-a1 and have captured it into vegas 7 just fine using the hdv capture utility. the clip properties report that it's 24p with no pulldown, just as it should.

i think some people are confusing the 24f from the a1 with the 24p (with pulldown) from the hv20; vegas cannot remove pulldown from footage shot on the hv20.

can you point me to the post(s) that tell you "no"? just curious to see their reasoning.

Yes, that is true, but the updated reader also plays havoc with AVCHD files (at least from Canon) so be wary and my suggestion would be to wait until 8.0c in lieu of installing the reader patch.

Until then, 7.0c is the preferred method for capturing Canon HDV files if I'm using Vegas and not HDVSplit.

Thanks for all the input. I borrowed a XH-A1 and downloaded a trial version of Cineform. Problem solved and the Pulldown removed. The footage looks great, except for in a few sequences where there is a lot of reflective material in the background there are a few jagged areas during quick movement. This is happening when I open the AVI's in WM Player.
Is this just my PC or did I do something wrong?
 
24f mode on the A1 is recorded as true 24p, no pulldown. That fact that Cineform is "removing" a pulldown is probably creating interlacing issues.
 
Ive been going through the same issues with
my hf100 camera, shooting 24P..
removing the pulldown in cineform..

On quick movements..i get the jagged areas too.

Im very interested if anyone has it locked down as to why such a thing is happening,
and what would be a good fix for it.

you didn't need to download cineform. a1 and vegas work fine together, however cineform helps to make hdv editing easier to manage.

also, don't confuse the xh models with the hv or hf ones.

xh (a1/g1/h1) = 24f with no pulldown = works natively with vegas capture

hv/hf = 24p with pulldown = need cineform to remove
 
OK, maybe that's the problem. After using Cineform and creating the AVI files, I open a project in Vegas at HDV 1080 24p. But when take a Cineform clip and open it in the trimmer it says the fps is 19.181. This I don't get.
Can I work with the downloads as they are now or should I just borrow another XH-A1 and recapture everything directly into Vegas?
The DP who shot everything is gone, so I'm not sure if he may have done something with the camera settings and not told me?

You say the Cineform helps make HDV editing easier? How?
 
are you referring to the display fps in the preview window? because that is just the adjusted playback speed. if you drop the quality to something around preview-auto or lower, you'll get better frame rates.

the proper way (tmk) to check the fps of a clip is to right click it and go to properties. under the video event tab, if the undersample rate is set to 1, then your fps should be 23.976. you can also find it in your project media tab under the category "frame rate"; might have to scroll right a bit though.

while the m2ts work fine within vegas, my workflow uses cineform intermediate because it helps manage the long gop of hdv, but again, it's not necessary.

check the fps of your cineform clips in project media or clip properties. if they are 23.976, then you're fine. i was just saying that it's misinforming to say that vegas needs cineform to deal with 24f.
 
Ok, I checked in Pref's and the fps is 19.

I think I'm going to have to recapture. Any timeline I put the clips into there are jumpy movements and dropped frames. I don't get this at all, in WMP it plays fine but into any "formated" timeline ... crap. Maybe something was screwy with CineForm? A setting or something on capture.
 
if you used cineform hdlink(neo), there's a box for "remove 3-2 pulldown". if you checked that box for a1 24f footage, it could possibly account for the missing frames because, as i mentioned in a previous post, canon 24f (not p) has no pulldown to remove. so yeah, you'll have to recapture.

24+5=29
29-5=24
24-5=19

Yes, used NEO hdlink, and checked off the 3-2 pulldown as I was told incorrectly by someone else.
Ahhhh, now I get it. I didn't realize the fps and pulldown was actually a math thing. Now it's makes sense.
Ok, recapture time.
I'm running Vegas 7e so from all that I have read should be a no brainer. I will post a note when complete.
