Why does a DVD with RCA's not scale to full TV height?

So i'm testing my DVD on a 42" plasma using a PS3 and HDMI cable and it scales to full height and width. However when I tried it on a cheap DVD player with RCA cables it doesnt scale to full height of the tv. The DVD was authored in widescreen and appears vertically "squished" with the RCA setup. Whats the deal? Do most tvs or players have an option to manually scale to full height?

Thanks
Tom

Is your DVD player set to know the TV is 16x9? That might be your problem, or check the rca in settings on your monitor...
