What are your thoughts on using the new Zeiss 18mm 3,5 lens with a 35mm adaptor, do you think its fast enough, can you recommend any other wideangle lens.

As for faster alternitives

On the low cost side or things...most wide Cooke lenses are faster than that... mine's a 18mm F2

On the high end... Zeiss Super Speeds are T1.3 - I'm assuming this lens would be a rental.

If you are filming outside the Zeiss should work well and allow you a stop or two for sharpness.

Indoor a 3.5 is a lot of stop to make up for considering all adapter loose additional light on top of that.

So even with the best adapters you'll be at 4 stops down out of the gate with the Zeiss lens you mentioned.

Too slow at that focal length. Our widest Zeiss prime that we'll be stocking is the 28mm f2. I can say with about 99.9% confidence that the edge fall-off of an 18mm prime is more of an issue with every adapter on the planet, than the light loss at f3.5. In other words, once you zoom in to clear all the fall-off you'll end up effectively at something more like 28mm in terms of FOV.

You'd have far better results (I have only tested our adapter) with the Nikon 17-35 f2.8D zoom if you're looking for a sharp wide angle lens.

I can get about 18-20mm clean FOV out of 14mm 2.8 Canon FD L but that's one of the fastest and widest primes available. And when it comes to price the Nikon 17-35 f2.8 seems a better deal indeed.

Again, speaking only for the Brevis with CF1le, (or CF1 on a small camera) that Nikon 17-35 is known for low edge fall-off and you can get an honest to goodness 38mm wide frame at all focal lengths. The system can provide the field of view more similar to a 16mm lens. It's without question the best we've tested. Wide zooms like this always perform better (and I'm only talking about edge to edge illumination) than an identical speed prime. In other words where a 28mm f3.5 prime would not have great edge to edge illumination, a 28-200mm f3.5 zoom does. I can't explain why, but we've tested enough lenses to say this with confidence. Once you get into the 35mm and above focal lengths this behaviour disappears. Again, I stress that we've only tested with our system so take these observations in that light (pun intended) :-)

Cheers,
Dennis
