Ogio Ty Video Bag/BackPack Review

Did about 3 days of research on bags/packs, and well I must say - This far by beat them all on specs. I also found a guy who sold this to me at $120.00 shipped (for me) since the other dealers are at least $139+.

Some of my criteria -

#1: Be able to fit 2 hvx's, + Zacuto Setup + 17" MBP

#2: Be able fit 1 HVX + Zacuto Setup + 17" MBP + 1 pairs of Pants (rolled) 3 Shirts, Socks and boxers and flip flops.

#2a: Be able to fit 1 HVX + Zacuto Setup + JVC VTR + 2 G-drives Quads 250gig + 17" MBP.

#3: Be able to be a "Carry on" with any airline company

#4: Protective body

#5: Water Proof Zippers

#6: Handle on the top (like my Laptop bag currently has)

#7: Not be a eye magnite to people who might look at it and go "WOW something nice must be in there. LETS STEAL IT".

#8: Tons of pockets :) Inside and Outside.

#9: Be able to seat my HVX with Baseplate with 18" rods, (with Storage of other rods in other compartments.

#10: Be able to wear without feeling like I am dying!

Exterior Dimensions

Ty Video Pack
19"h x 15"w x 10.5" d
Kata 207
25.2"h x 11.8"w x 15.3"long

Anyways, Long story Short. Ty Video IMHO won hands down. And to top it off, I am not walking around with a butt bag. (those who have seen the Kata, will know what I am talking about)

Yeah i have the ty bag two. Its a great bag. A few weeks ago i went on a trip and was able to carry..

DVX100B
Century Optics Fisheye
Century Optics LCD Shade
Two Batteries
DVX Charger
5 Tapes
Skate Tool
4 Large Skateboard Wheels
Cell Phone Charger
35mm P&S
Pentax K1000
Nikon D50
18-300mm Lens
Peleng Fisheye
3 Pocket Wizards
2 Flashes
Two tee shirts
Boxers
Socks
Pair of pants
Manfrotto Tripod
and Two Flash Stands

Also one thing i use a lot on it that you didn't mention is it has a built in led light at the top of the bag. If you are in a low lit area you can easily turn it on and be able to see all your stuff.

Even with almost 50 lbs of equipment its still pretty easy to carry. I weigh about 110 lbs and am able to carry it around NYC.

when its loaded down you find it comfy on your lower back? that bag killed me. its like there was a hard piece of sharp plastic digging across my back. and you think its a protective bag? i found it to be really thin and have very little padding. and the "skate fairy" print kills it. i also blew out a total of 3 zippers(2 diff bags) on a ty 2 and 2 zippers on a ty 1. and the ty2 will not fit in overhead compartments of the smaller planes(express planes). the ty 1 barely fits and that involves cramming it.

but it does have a lot of space for its size, i just think they dropped the ball on the execution of making it a well working bag with quality and ergonomics being the main issues.

i'm much happier with my kata 207.

this bag may be fine but its not the kata hb-207. the fact it fits two cameras (the kata fits one) and is slightly smaller than the kata is evidence enough that it doesn't have nearly the same amount of padding and protection.

If you are going up a mountain and plan on dropping your pack, you are right the Kata would be better, BUT for normal day use, no need for that much protection.

or putting it in a overhead with people jamming their pilot bags into it. The protection the kata provides is nowhere near overkill but to each his own.

Yea you are right to each his own, some more paranoid (in good humor stab) than others, but I travel a lot. Both ground and air, and I used to use my Impact bag I got form BHphoto with HVX and never an issue, Both packs are way more secure than that. So I think all in all define what you are going to use it for and then choose wisely. lol :) Anyone got pics of their set up in either of the two bags? (the TyVideo2 or the Kata.) I would like to start building a nice workflow :)

Just read this bag offers a Lifetime 30year warranty on defects and workmanship. (im sure this is across the board with most products) This thread is just my review and personal opinion. (I think there usually is not one "right", "perfect for every application" product out there, but being informed on each product at someone else's expense is always nice!

maybe its just my skinny build but that ty 2 bag was very uncomfortable on my lower back.

here's my current setup with my kata 207

The Kata, is 25" long v. the Ty Video 2 at 19" long - you are carrying the same amount weight I assume, so the way it is distributed for your body frame might be why? (you know like 13lbs over 19 inches v. 13lbs over 25 inches of body)

I am glad they went back to the all black interior, That white throws me off looking for something in your set up :)

Nope, just one logo. Also the new one TyVideo 2 is a bit bigger than the Ty Video 1

Edit: The one logo is small and sits on the bottom of where the DLSR would go :)

I like the logo and if it was my product I would want that at least!

Okay, so I took this on my first Hike. Now I did not need to, but I wanted to tests its durability and easiness. I had the full loaded and hiked inclined 200ft, The rock climbed another I believe 200ft. Also have tripod, No case. but did not really slow me down. With 50lbsish on my back. I did not really fell like a turtle. Rock Climbing. I did not need climbing gear. It was a climb with some decent footing at most points. 6" ledges and 5 foot obstacles. So it was not bad, and not bad going down either. The top is 6500 ft and base where we entered if I am right is 6100.You zig zag up the base, and takes about 45mins, and then you haev to climb and takes about 15mins.

It was comfortable. At first I had it seated wrong, and one of my 18" rods (attached to my zactuo base, which is attached to the camera) was stabbing me in the back. I opened it up, slide the rods towards to teh top, and that problem was solved. Also coming down I repositioned the back pack, and noticed a bit uncomfortable, but that was because it was not sitting on my shoulders, but rather hanging. So I positioned it back and it was fine. Pack + tripod was a good hike. I enjoyed it!

I have the the Ty 1 Bag. To be honest, if you use it as a transport and are not actually wearing it that much, it's a great bag. Unfortunately I bought it for a two week trip shooting all over Scotland last year. I was hiking a lot, riding on trains and in taxis, walking down a lot of city streets. I must say that the Ty 1 is the most uncomfortable backpack I have ever used. I also have the Cinebags 20 bag and it is much more comfortable. Doesn't carry my MBP like the Ty does though so I needed to take the Ty to Europe.

The zippers are cheap and flimsy, two of them are right on the edge of breaking. The bag does hold a huge load of gear though but the ergonomics suck as far as I am concerned. I am buying the CineBags Model 22 that will carry the laptop. It is just simply more comfortable, the Ty was like a torture device.
