"The Hills"

I really don't like this type of show. But I have a hard time convincing people who do like it that these people have boom mics and bounce boards hovering over them (if not lights) during their "private conversatins". Lavaliers do not provide audio that good, and I have never seen lighting that perfect at every possible time of the day.

It is definitely scripted "reality". There was an article in TV guide with one of the producers and "stars" and they explained how they go about planning the show. It boils down to them asking the people they follow what their schedule is for the week; the producers then make suggestions on what they can change and who they should meet; after that they then go about "capturing" those moments.

When I was in Vegas last I met a PA who worked on the Hills last time they were in town and he said they pre lit the club location they filmed in for three hours.

It kills me when people debate the reality of "reality" shows.

Once you work in "reality" TV you realize that the important part of the phrase is "TV".

It's freakin' TV dude, of course it is not real.

Anyone who argues otherwise is kinda missing the point.

Enjoy it for 23 mins and then flip the channel.

End of story.

The amount of reality is inversely proportionate to the production values.

The production values on "The Hills" are relatively high. Meaning, as Jason said, you have a lots of lights and crew standing around. And plenty of time for the actors to rehearse their lines.
If you had one person with an HV20 and no lights it would be less intrusive and possibly more real. But the picture would look terrible and the sound would be even worse. Would anybody watch?

Once the participants are aware they are being watched the reality is gone. Of course everyone here knows that, but Aunt Mildred thinks it's real. The producers count on Aunt Mildred and millions more just like her to boost their ratings.

The last 'real' reality show I can remember was Candid Camera will Allen Funt.

Everybody here has the right to their opinion, but anybody who doesn't love The Hills is a moron.

there's a bar/restaurant called Luna Park downstairs on the street level of the building Sabi Pictures is in. and if you hurry, you can catch Audrina eating lunch in there right now. I just popped in for a chicken breast BLT.

Personally, I like the concept of The Hills. I think the people (aka characters) are despicable people so that's a huge turnoff. but the same producers did a one season show following women's roller derby called Rollergirls and that was awesome. It's basically improv-based, objective-driven, narrative filmmaking using non-actors. and I like that.

yeah.

Can't grasp why people would want to watch other people just doing the daily minutiae of their lives, if it's obviously scripted and edited for story.

Can't understand why people would want to watch other people just doing the daily minutiae of their lives, even if it were unscripted and somehow unedited, for story.

How can there be so many people with so little going on in their life, that there's money to be made, showing them other people living their lives?

Weird.

LOL. When I was out in L.A. in June, I was at the club GOA and Audrina showed up there with a posse. Brody Jenner followed in shortly afterward... For a minute I thought I was going to see the whole cast come strolling in.
