Cinema 4D R11 Released

For those of you who don't know, Maxon dropped R11 today at Siggraph. Some highlights are new GI, NLA, 64 bit support for Mac, Projection Man, CineMan, and, my favorite, they doubled the rendering speed on multi-core machines.

Projection Man and CineMan are noteworthy due to the fact they were part of the fabled Production Bundle, with the former being developed exclusively for Sony Picture Imageworks', and the latter being the bridge to Renderman.

Holy mother great news but I'm broke so I need to save up. New GI sounds great and projection man and cineman sound interesting although a little disappointing to not see a dynamics and particle update.

I've been a Cinema user for a while now but have strayed over to Houdini. That's where I'd have a look if your interested in AWESOME dynamics & particle effects.

Regards,

Ben

I won't be upgrading until next year, if enough money comes in.
The advantages, which mainly are all in the global illumination fixes, I don't have a lot of use for. If a paying customer demands it and the money's there, yeah.

Modeling wise, no advantage. I don't use GI anyways due to flickering right now, and the standard renders along with some good multipass lighting & most importantly, compositing, should be fine.

A few tidbits with body paint but not worth the upgrade. I use the UVW mode but for painting I use photoshop.

I'll hold out for 11.5, if they fix the other issues, or 12 at this point, which I suppose I'll have to.

I also have other software (Vegas) and hardare (PC) that needs attention, so they probably take priority at the moment all things considered.

Tempting just to get the render boost, since we do have a 7x8 processor render farm here. But we'll probably hold off.

RenderTitan just had a 50% off sale. For me it's kind of like, should I buy a car, insurance, gas, yearly fixes or just keep taking taxis? :)

Cineversity has some free videos showing off some of the new features. You really got to see these to see the value in this upgrade. The new NLA stuff is awesome and can save many hours of animation time while allowing for much more complex, easier to set up animations. The GI is impressive, as well as new material preview.

I'm disappointing no advance in dynamics or particles but I love the additions and Maxon is giving me a deal thus I'm upgrading.

The coolest thing to me is Projection Man it looks amazing. NLA looks nice so does the new Advance Render. I haven't dove into animation a whole lot especially not CA but I want too.

I guess I will buy silverbullet for my dynamics solution for now. Anybody here use it?

Also they finally added 23.976 frame rate support! Not mentioned anywhere but someone looked for me!

DON´T TRY THE DEMO!

It get´s you addicted and you have to shell out the $$ for upgrade.

Holy Moly, rendering is so much faster with the new GI render engine.
And no more flicker (they say) so we can finaly use it for animation.
Looks a bit like "Final Render" to me.

The new Matte Paint tool is a pretty cool feature also.

Strange thing is you have to buy "Advanced Render" to get the RenderMan plugin.

This is something I've been hearing around the Internets. For me, I never use dynamics and I've barely scratched the surface of TP. There were rumors of a simulation module and/or water related stuff, that would have been cool.

One thing I wish they would fix is the depth pass issue with OpenEXR and multi-pass, and add layered OpenEXR support would be great. Hopefully in a 11.1 update or something...

Yeah that would be nice also just an upgrade to Cinemas built in DOF would of been nice too.

do you do any rigging and CA animating? Just curious I haven't attempted yet but will.

I've done one spot for the local zoo where I modeled, rigged, and animated a stingray in a toon type environment. It was a simple rig compared to others, but it was my first go at it and it was a short turn around.

Motion clips would have been nice since I could have just created loops of the fin motion, tail motion, etc and blended them; threw in some of those new pivots and been good to go.

Here's a link

Very cool oneinfinite and really good for a first go at it. Can you recommend any good beginner rigging and animating tutorials?

I take it you will be getting R11 soon? What kind of computer are you running?

We'll probably be getting soon I hope. I'm still on 10.1 and there are a few things in each of the two latest releases that I would like to have. The doubled render speed is the clincher since that is all important and a brick wall we hit every so often.

I just got an 8 core Mac Pro w/ 18GB's RAM and the new ATI HD3870 video card. It's great watching 8 scanlines running down those render views!

As for the rigging and such, I just read the manual, read through Cinema 4D 10 Workshop and poked through some of the stuff in the content browser. I've done simple character animation in Maya before, but nothing extensive. I'm actually trying to put together an animated short where I'll dive headfirst into some CA.

Thanks for the tips. My gosh 8 core mac with 18gb ram I'm jealous :(. Sounds great and sounds like it could really take advantage of the new R11.

I guess just like anything its best to just dive right into and real all i can :).

Anyone know when it's coming out. No Renderman with the demo. Sweet projection mattes. Can't wait to render em' bigger than 640x400
