Video Post HD Monitor?

We currently have a very nice DV editing system consisting of the following:

Apple MacPro 8-core (Intel)
Apple 30-inch Cinema display
Ciprico Fiber Channel 2.5TB RAID
Canon XL-1S camcorder (standard def)
Sony HVR-M15AU HDV video tape recorder (firewire, s-video, composite, in/out)
Sony PVM-14M4U (standard def CRT monitor, SMPTE Phosphor, switchable 4:3/16:9)

We would finally like to upgrade to HD and are planning to purchase a Sony EX-3 camcorder, but I can't seem to find a quality HD monitoring solution to replace our Sony 14-inch CRT video monitor.

We've looked at the Matrox MXO, but decided against it because we'd like a video monitor that's separate from the computer monitor so we can instantly see the results of our edits.

We've considered the Black Magic Intensity and a high-end consumer display (Pioneer plasma), but all the good consumer displays are huge (47-inch+). We don't have room for something that big. Somewhere between 14-inch and 24-inch would be a better fit.

Ideally, we'd like something that we can easily dial in using SMPTE color bars and a "blue only" setting. (or something similar)

Are our only options expensive CRT HD monitors ($5000+)? We could probably swing that if necessary, but I'd like to make sure that's our only option.

We don't plan to ever take this monitor in the field....but we might if it could serve double duty. Using it for editing is our number one priority.

We would also need a firewire-to-monitor output box. Maybe the Black Magic Intensity would work well for that? Or maybe the new MOTU V4HD? Or even an HD-SDI box?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

What I did was add another monitor (another apple display would be perfect) and plug that into the second DVI port, and then set up final cut pro to output external video to the preveiw monitor, full screen. This will treat the second monitor as an external video monitor, so your canvas/viewer (whichever is selected) is displayed full screen, full resolution.

Also when your not using FCP you can use it as a second monitor which is always useful...

I have been told the Computer monitors are not going to show you the true frame rate your shooting in. They do not refresh the same as a CRT Monitor.
Im trying to figure out what I can use for my similar studio.

No kidding? This works? Sounds like a great way to do it. My only question would be quality? How to you set it up with color bars (blue gun only), to set color, contrast, brightness, etc...? Also, we use the firewire monitor output in AfterEffects quit a bit, so we would assume I'd loose that capability. (firewire>HDV deck>NTSC monitor)

I have the JVC 24" HD-SDI monitor and it is excellent for HD Post.

That's the one we're currently leaning toward. But we need to figure in the expense of a fireware>HD SDI converter box. That makes it very pricey. (we really like the new MOTU V4HD, is it out yet?)
