TV monitor for editing

I am trying to hook up a TV monitor to my computer for editing purposes. I bought a small HDTV and hooked it up with a S-video cable to my video card hoping to view what I see on my program monitor (in Adobe Premiere) on the TV screen. I tried video 1, 2 and 3, but nothing is happening. What am I missing here? Can somebody help me resolve that problem? It would be greatly appreciated !

Which version of Premiere?

Generally speaking, you can't just plug in an S-Video cable and preview out. In order to use it, you'd have to go into your video card setup program and assign the s-video port as another monitor (but many cards support only two monitors, so if you have two computer monitors, you'll either have to give one up, or you can't do it this way). Then, you could theoretically use it as a preview monitor.

However, this is not a good way to go.

Best way is to preview out through firewire, through your camera, then into the TV. This is supported with DV and HDV projects.

Or, you can use a preview card, like a Blackmagic Designs Intensity or Decklink, or (more expensively) an Aja Xena or other Aja card. For HD preview other than HDV, it's the only way.

You can select from available external preview devices by clicking on the little three-circle icon under the preview window, and then choosing "Playback Settings."

Here is what I see when I open 'Playback Settings':

Realtime Playback > External device: none (only option)
Export > External device: none (only option)

I really don't know what to do with that yet. Have to research it or if you have the time to give me other pointers it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much!

This is from Premiere Help:

If you’re editing a DV project, you can preview the sequence on a television monitor via your IEEE 1394 connection and DV camcorder or video deck.
Note: On Mac OS, you will not be able to preview on a TV monitor via camcorders or decks in HDV mode. Set these, instead, to DV or Auto mode.

  1. Make sure that the monitor is connected to the DV camcorder or deck and that the DV camcorder or deck is connected to your computer.
  2. (DV camcorder only) Set the camcorder to output to the monitor. Some devices detect this automatically, while others require you choose a menu option.
  3. Choose Project > Project Settings > General, and click the Playback Settings button.
  4. In the Playback Settings dialog box, choose the desired options.

Would a regular home video deck do the job instead of the camcorder ? I don't think I want to subject my new camcorder to this.

It will if it's a DV deck. Just a typical VHS VCR won't have the firewire.

It doesn't hurt the camera in the slightest.

it should be a dv deck or a camcorder with Dv input facility. Most Camcorders in our damned European Market does not have the Dv input for customs definition Purposes. A camcorder with Dv input is defined as an another type of Camcorder and pays a lot more Customs Duty if it is Coming from outside the European Union. Being it that all Camcorder Producers hail from the far East (Japan/Korea) that's quite a problem for us, because apart from the price shootup in between Dv out and Dv in & out Camcorders, it is very hard to find the latter in stores.
