Started Hiring and amazed at some of the responses

Am I the only one this happens too, or is this something that happens when you hire people?

I had a job posting to send resumes, working rates, etc to an email address. Internet portfolios only. Most of the applicants sent applications missing working rates, missing contact info, spelled terribly.

Here is one example.

HI IM (removed) IM INTERESTTE IN UR JOB OFFER CREATING SOME CREATURES . HERE IS MY ARTLINK . U NEED TO COPY AND PASTE THE LINK AND MAKE SURE TO CHECK ALL MY 3 PAGES THERE AND REPLY BACK . THANKS.

What is going on with the job market now-a-days. People are stupid. End rant.

I was astounded. I've hired people before, but never online. Why would you hire someone who couldn't spell "I'm" correctly.

Lots of laughs going through those resumes. Granted, there are some really nice ones that came in. But ones like the quoted guys were much more common.

so do i get the job or not?

Professionals are probably mostly occupied, working professionally.

That leaves most everyone else available, I guess.

That sounds like the work of some kind of automated spam-bot. Notice how it wants you to check a link.

Actually, Mike, for people from your neck of the woods, "abutt" is not that uncommon. However, the more typical pronunciation is "aboot," ay?

Just kidding, man! I love Canadians! :)

Mattykins, that is terribly sad. Have any of my business emails been that unimpressive?

Mike are you Canadian or something? ...cause last I checked, Ithaca is quite a way from the border!

Mike isn't in Ithaca.

And you know, if I had any sense, I would scrap my project. But so far, I am sticking to it. No idea how long that ambition will last.

I just thought it was amazing at the emails I got. And no nick, your emails were fine.

Just one question: Are you looking to hire an artist (creature builder) or a writer? The only thing that should really matter to you in this case is the quality of his creature work, I would think. Many a great artist has been illiterate.

Just my 2 cents...

.

Oh ... I see... sorry. And I have complete faith in you completing your project...you can do it. I've been following your thread & feel your pain.
I've had similar problems and have lost a few for my crew. It seems there's not a lot of people here from the upstate NY area.

Hang in there...and as always if there's anything I can do to help you out...just let me know!

...and sorry Mike, I misread Penguin's post.

English may not have been the applicant's first language.

But I'm also wondering whether Internet ads themselves are just as "unprofessional" as the spelling-mistake-ridden responses from applicants. I mean, you get a Craigslist ad asking for all this information but providing no details as to what the compensation might be, who the company is, what the project details or benefits are. No wonder you're going to get people replying without a higher degree of professionalism.

I don't know if your ad was like this at all. Was your post a Craigslist ad? I've responded to those before, with the same professionalism I would give to any job ad, only to find out that the job paid $8 an hour or wanted a college intern not a pro. Makes it hard to take them as seriously. How well written and how clear was your ad to attract so many weak responses?

Would you hire a person who doesn't follow a simple Please send email to. Include Subject line as: Include said components.

They ignore you fully, don't have the decency to spell check, and you expect them to deliver a product?

I mean, if you want to hire someone who won't follow a simple request and expect them to follow a contract. Then more power to you. I on the other hand would rather hire someone that cares than someone who doesn't.

It's only going to get worse. I write ads for a living. Spent most of my career in agencies, but have been freelancing for almost two years now. Since our twins arrived six months ago, I've been looking at getting a so-called real job again. On several occasions, agency people have looked at my portfolio and said, "Wow, a writer who actually writes." Amazing. Although having been in the position myself to hire junior writers, I really shouldn't be that amazed.

Anyway, when writers can't even write, what hope is there for the rest of the world?
