What are some of the best behind the scenes DVDs which actually teach you something about filmmaking? I love the LOTR extended editions, which is almost a filmschool unto itself, and Robert Rodriguez's DVDs are always interesting.

Any others?

The Aliens Special Edition has an incredibly exhaustive set of behind the scenes pieces. Really in depth info on how they made the movie and accomplished a lot of the special effects.

The Lord of the Rings Extended Cuts all have amazing BTS stuff on them. I watched them a couple years ago and just actually started re-watching them yesterday. There gotta be 5 hours for each movie. From Writing to Pre-viz to Production, Miniatures, Bigatures, Weta Digital, Post-Pruduction/ Editing, and finally the delivery and premiere. In my opinion, easily the best ever making of for any film(s) ever.

I liked "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and "Blade 2" (I have the two disc set for Blade 2). Also the Tenth Anniversary Edition of "Reservoir Dogs" was pretty awesome. And I definitely enjoyed the extras on Robert Rodriguez's "Desperado" which may have been my favorite.

Besides hollywood, don't exclude indie movies....

Indie movies have way different BTS content then a hollywood movie, and normally shows you a lot more of the hands on how to than a normal movies BTS video. Hollywood BTS normally is talking about stuff thats interesting but wont teach you much, or they are explaining equipment/software you'll never get your hands on in your lifetime. Indie films will have more relatable content, thats just my opinion.

Good call on LOTR, those movies along with the BTS content = ....well you know.

I found the production and post-production diaries for the 2005 King Kong to be great. There's a ton of fantastic material on the DVD release of the 1933 Kong as well.

Dead Poets Society DVD has a Cinematography Master Class with John Seale.

Yeah, I remember that one well, one of the best.

I wish PRIMER and PI had behind the scenes features. The commentaries are great, but they left me wanting more.

Second that.
The forced persepective discussions were interesting. Not often talked about.

Most of the Robert Rodriguez films have some kind of Indie -type movie making feature.

There are even some cool ones on the Spy Kids movies.

I think I've learnt as much as my 1st year film school course thanks to the DVDs you guys have recommended. It's always great to learn in areas outside your specialisation! Thanks guys!
