Whats the best font manager?

I have a whole lot of fonts purchased/downloaded and I want to be able to store them and only use when I need to so they don't bog down my computer. I'm working on a HP work station.

What programs are you guys using?

Josh

I came across these answers to the same question back when I was looking for a font manager. I haven't tried them yet.

Typograf: "I use Typograf and find it really good. You can set up groups of fonts for specific projects, activate and deactivate fonts as needed, and set up a database of your font collection. I find the help file pretty decent. Also, truetype or opentype fonts don't need to be installed, just double click the font file before you open your graphics or other program and it should show up in your font list."

On my Vista machine, I have been happy with
FontExpert 2007. (works with XP)

I did try Font Fitting Room Deluxe, but I hated it. Or, at least I couldnt seem to make it work for me. Non-intuitive.

Be sure to let us know what you end up with and how you like it.

(My personal needs are that I have 10s of 1000s of fonts, but dont want them all loading up. So, when I go into PS or AI or AE, I want to be able to bring in only the fonts I need.)

Wow that sounds great Gage that is just what I need. I didn't even know programs like these existed until a few days ago. I will test out typograf and font expert they very handy. Yesterday I attempted to install like a 1,000 fonts and let me tell you that didn't work out and that led me to font managers.

Thanks again
Josh

Yeah, I used to keep about 3000 fonts in my Windows font folder that loaded every time I started an app. Between fonts and plugins, PS would take about 5 minutes to load. I have NO extra fonts now, and two plugins (I didnt really use them all anyway) and PS just starts, no delay.

Again, please let me know how you like those.

Font Xplorer does not support Adobe Type 1 fonts and OpenType fonts with PostScript outlines. It works with TrueType and OpenType fonts that have TrueType outlines.

What? I just want something that handles my fonts. I dont know what any of that means.

Postscript fonts are few and far between for your standard PC or Mac. You usually don't have a need for them and usually won't have any on your computer... They're mainly used for high end printing shops... and even then, they're probably going to use OpenType fonts which wrap TrueType fonts.
