For anyone upset by the prequels and Indy IV, enjoy--

Poor old George! He's pioneered SFX, Dolby Digital surround sound and brought full frame HD to the mass market, resulting in the technology which gave us the DVX, and people still want to bag him!

But then.....he DID give us JAR JAR!!!!!!!! :)

Love him or hate him, he is arguably the single most important person in the history of modern film. Most people, even filmmakers, don't understand how far-reaching his impact is.

But I still can't sit through the prequels.

Not to mention easily the most successful 'independent' filmmaker ever.
What he has been able to pull off is absolutely jaw dropping.

But I still can't sit through the prequels.

Yeah, me neither.
Not even close.

that's a big family tree....
His late films may not stand up (altought they were good for the main public), but it's true that he was the starting point for improvements, even if he wasn't directly involved.

Everyone knows my thoughts on George

The man was bad ass w/ THX, American Graffiti and of course the first couple of Star Wars films ..

But then, right around Jedi, he decided to stop taking it seriously and embraced the marketing more than the art. See Ewoks ....

Star Wars and Empire were both very adult oriented films. The fact that kids embraced them were an accident, they were spawned from the filmmakers (playing with train sets) imagination. It is the shift towards developing the films for children that ruined the Star Wars franchise.

The tinkering ? Some of the tinkering George has done has been good; cleaning up garbage mattes, improving F/X shots ... but adding all the cutesy silly stuff just ruined it. Like painting over a masterpiece; an artist never knowing when to stop poo pooing with the canvas.

It's great he has brought us technology, but his filmmaking artistry has long died.

I remember when Scorsese was presented with his OScar and onstage came Coppolla, Spielberg and Lucas.

I could not help but think "This dude just does NOT belong up there."

How many Episode IVs does he have to produce to be considered great? So the prequels sucked. Doesn't change the jaw dropping success and impact of the original 3.

Spielberg and Coppola have had just as many duds, if not more. Orson Welles helmed many pictures that were not anywhere near the quality of Citizen Kane and yet he is still given his due.

Everyone knows the prequels sucked. We all get it. The fans have been beating that dead horse for years and years.

George Lucas is a legend, no matter how you slice it.

Yeah, really, Coppola has been sucking for about the same length as George. Not as abysmally, but really, he hasn't produced anything close to being great since the early 80's.

Speaking of Coppola

Has anyone yet watched YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH ?

Spielberg has had as many duds ? I'm thinking of HOOK ?

Coppola has lost the touch no doubt, but with The Conversation, The Godfather films and Apocalypse NOW and the Oscars he has won ...... Well ... there you go.

Breathing George's name i nthe same breath as them makes no sense too me.

The one thing about George is that he makes the movies he wants to make. I may not like them, but they are his movies. Besides, those guys are a fraternity of sorts. They grew up i the industry together and along with guys like DePalma and Milius defined a generation of close knit, often interdependent filmmakers who all achieved success DOn't know if we'll evr see that again.

Funny thing about that family tree is that it doesn't seem to even mention Pixar, which was the name of the computer that guys like Alvy Ray Smith and John Lasseter helped develop while working for Lucas. It was the genesis (no pun intended for Trekkies) of CG animation as we know it today. And it was under that banner that Alvy and other big-brained types pioneered the Alpha channel, non-linear editing and most of what we use today as computer dependent filmmakers.

It's on the tree. Look further down.
