Good tripod for $500 or less

I'm saving for an HVX200, but the only tripod I have is a photo tripod. I've made it work with my vx1000, but the HVX is quite a bit heavier. I'm looking for a sturdier tripod that's made for video, but I probably won't have more than $500 in the tripod budget after spending $5,200 on the hvx. Am I out of my mind for thinking I could get a decent tripod for under $500? Or is there one anyone can reccomend?

Sry, but I hate that particular tripod^

Amvona "Dynatran at9903". Its a discontinued model thats easily able to support 20lbs with , arguably, smooth movement. It has a 100mm bowl so you can upgrade to a different fluid head down the road (if you like spending $). I've been waiting for one to come up on ebay for months and finally got one for $269 and mine came with two arms and a pretty nice bag. The legs are built like a tank, but the pan isnt as effortless as a $1000+ tripod. I gotta tell you tho, I love it and it cost sooo much less than the other options i had. My boss was so impressed by how solid it is that he wants to dump his libec and pick one up.

Thanks for the tip! By the way i love your signature quote. So true.

Sure this tripod might be better but it is in a different league (MSRP: $1054.00) and you therefore shouldn't compare it to a $650 tripod.
About the quote: I would agree about the first part of it but strongly disagree with the second part. To truly execute your vision the technicalities might be very relevant....:)

threadjack starting now:

dont misunderstand the quote. I use that one alot when i'm tryin to explain mac to 90's pc editor guys who are totally outta date. They cant really execute their ideas on the crap they have, so the technicalities are extremely relevant. However, if we have an Avid vs FCP bickering and both guys are turning out great material with similar specs, the technicalities of their workflow are less relevant. Its not to say that technical details of how to accomplish something should be thrown out the window, just viewed with an open mind with judgement passed on the final product.

There have been times where i have seen better work produced on Canon GL1's and Sony vx1000s than some work done on HVX200s. I'm not saying that the quality of a GL comes close to the quality of a HVX, but resolution and frame rates have no significance if the work is ****. Some people can afford all the equipment they want, but they dont know how to use it. Where there are people who can barely afford the most inexpensive camera to have manual features, and produce some pretty great stuff.

I agree 100%. MattMcDermitt is a good example for this. It's just amazing what he did with only a tripod and his Dvx.
