Are Heist Movies Over?

Hey guys. Working on idea for a heist film and I got to wondering if there's been a bit of a glut in heist movies in relatively recent times.

I mean, of course there's the Ocean's movies and then there's Snatch, Layer Cake, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, The Bank Job, Inside Man just to mention a few, not to mention most of Tarantino's work and classics like Heat and The Killing.

So what do you think? Can there be too many heist films?

Yes and no. If you were to make a heist film that was like every other heist film, and that was the only kind that got made over and over, then yes there could be too much. However, if you put a really unique and interesting twist on the idea of a heist film, that would be great. As long as people have original material and come up with good, unique ideas, there can never be too many. In my opinion.

no way man. i love a good heist flick. always have always will. it just needs to be a fresh take on things. and i loved pretty much every movie you named.

Yup, all you need is a fresh new angle, and there'll be a readymade audience for your film. On the other hand, that last thing we need is yet another half-baked Oceans ripoff or Tarantino wannabe... :)

I agree with the advice to do something creative and different. Can you combine the concepts of 'Ocean's Eleven' and 'Memento', for instance? Or maybe a near-future blend of scifi and heist -- 'The Italian Job' meets 'Blue Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'?

Get creative, make it memorable -- then nobody's going to care what genre it is.

Good insights guys. Thanks for the feedback. I find myself watching a lot of them and there are so many that are well made. I have an idea that could be unique if done the right way. I'm gonna keep marinating it.

chapel are you referring to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? just checking.

another is Sexy Beast. it's a heist flick that doesn't center on the heist at all. the heist is just the dramatic background for the real story, where in a lot of the others the heist is the movie, almost a character itself.

Duh! Stupid typo. Yes, that's what I meant to say. Thanks for the catch.

Definitely not over. But you have to come up with an interesting concept. And as far as straight up money goes, I don't think that works anymore. Money is boring. We've all heard all the numbers over and over again. 100 grand is no different from 50 million. It's just "money". That's why the scripts that get pushed through the pipeline are original takes like Inside Man and Bank Job. In both cases, they weren't going in for money. As far as the Oceans films: well, duh. Pitt and Clooney in same movie means you can have a script about cat care and they'll buy it.

There are two types of movies I've always wanted to write but don't think I'd be any good at. Horror and Heist. But who knows. If I come up with a great idea, maybe I'll take a shot at one.

Very true.

Glad to see you guys are still into them because I know I love 'em.
