Can the Canon FD aperture leafs dilate when off the camera, or is it broken?

Just bought a second hand Canon FD lens on Ebay, and the aperture doesn't visibly dilate when turned (like my pentax series) Can this only happen when mounted to a camera or mount?

yeah, it works only when its attached, you need to test it with it mounted onto something.

Some lenses still won't work until you lock the sliding pin on the back in the "up" position. There is a lock feature on some, but for others that don't I use a little piece of scrap plastic to hold it in place.

Set the aperture to f22 or something, then move the pin, you should see the blades close then.

If your FD lens has a silver ring around it, you can lock your aperture. If it's black with green printing on it you need to lock your aperture open with something (I used a cut up plastic toothpick) and then when it's seated on an adapter (and only then) will you be able to control the aperture. It's like a 2-5 min hack it's easy. There's pictures I believe on the cinevate forums and the redrock forums.

Ah right, so this is pretty standard then. Thing is I don't have an adapter yet to test them on, so will have to leave positive feed back on Ebay, without know if they fully work. My problem.

I have Canon FD 28mm f2.8, and I have different problem.
When I change from f22 to f8 everything works fine , and after that nothing happens. f2.8 is dark as f8.
What could be the problem?
