Fashion/ Glamour videography

Hi, I wanted to play around with lighting techniques, so I am setting up a fashion shoot with my model friend.

I will be handling the videography, while my friend practices her photography skills, and I was wondering if anyone had tips for fashion/glamour videography.

If i wished to highlight the beauty or fashion of an individual, what tips would you give for framing, camera movement, etc.? Maybe if anyone has done this sort of thing, a link to the finished product would be helpful.

Thanks a lot!

Yes, I'll be in charge of lighting. It will probably be one good quality soft box, 2 cheapo clamp lights with balanced bulbs, some gel/diffusions, and some reflectors.

I am a big supporter of 'there is no right or wrong way', but just as a general pointer, soft lighting is usually the way to go.

Camera movements are smooth and gracious, while composition rules are generally the same.

The direction of the model will be very important since she is going to practically be the video.

Research a bit and look at makeup commercials, and other likewise media. They will tell you a lot!

I'd say either buy some fashion/glamour magazines, analyze the shots. Look on the web for runway footage, or look at music videos. A lot of music videos seem to be going for the 'look' and 'style' over anything else...

The exercise is to reverse engineer the lighting setup.

Generally speaking you want diffused light. Very even. Even better if you can get into a studio to do it.

Most fashion and beauty photography involves huge soft sources and flat frontal lighting. Something like a 2k through a medium Chimera as a key source is a good place to begin.

I recommend watching some Playboy videos... not to perv on them, but because they're really well done and make the women look amazing.

WOW, saturnin, lol.

I almost showed that to my model friend in regards to what I was gonna do. I almost didn't screen the clip!

HAHA, that would have been awkward. Though I would LIKE to see her in those positions, I doubt she would be willing, haha! But yeh, nice stuff.

Yes, I only look at Playboy for academic review, pure research... Especially when my wife finds me in the bathroom viewing them with one hand otherwise occupied in 'deep research'...

I didn't say anything about "academic review". I was making the point that the photographers (and videographers that shoot the videos) are seasoned professionals and that it would be wise to try and mimic the results that they are able to achieve.

No.

But...

You are right Tommy. They are good to study. No more joking.
