Advice on how to find good stock footage for bands intro vid?

Ok, i THINK it's called stock footage but i don't really know.

A band i've been working with on some music videos asked me to put together like a 30 second intro for their next show. it's at a club in vancouver that has a few big video screens, and before they come out on stage, the lights go off and you hear these sounds of like, war sound effects.. like, helicopters, explosions, stuff like that.

they want me to put together like a 30 second video of stuff like explosions, 70's war footage.. actually they compared it to the part in forrest gump when it's the 70's and they show martin luther king, the black panthers, etc.

any advice on where i can get this kinda footage to use for this video? as for as i know it will ONLY be used in the club before the concert and not for youtube, or for sale in any way. i don't have to worry about copyrighted stuff do i? i guess that's another question.

anyways, hope ya'll have some good advice cuz this one is new to me and i don't wanna let the boys down! Thanks in advance!

Yes, you DO have to worry about copyright, since you are in essence doing a public screening of the footage.

There is stock footage out there, though. Just do a Google (or Yahoo) search for 'stock footage' and you should come up with all kinds of sites. They'll spell out their licensing requirements.

Good luck!

ok thanks. do you have any particular sites you could recommend?

i didnt search it yet. i wanted to see if anyone thought there were some sites that stood out as being best to use.. but i'll check that out now..

i'm curious about this copyright business. i mentioned it the band and they were like 'oh i'm sure thats not a problem, we're just playing it in a club and it's not like the people there are going to report us!'.. ha ha.. well.. looks like i need to be more careful than he thought....

but yeah, i'll look up the sites and read their stipulaitons.. thanks again.

Well, it's likely no one WILL report you. That doesn't make it right or legal. And if the club owner is smart, he/she won't let you screen copyrighted material in their club without having it cleared. It's their butts in a sling too.

On the other hand, there's likely a good bit of 'public domain' footage from wars gone by. There's also royalty-free stuff -- pay the fee up-front, and you get to use it as you want. Just be sure to read all the licensing info for the various sites.

Here are a few to get you started...

I don't think there's gonna be a problem showing a 30 sec clip at a club, it's not like the show is gonna be broadcasted on ABC live from Giant Stadium with a huge spectacular video wall behind the band.

istockphoto.com has video too

No, there probably won't be a problem -- but it's still illegal. If the original poster doesn't care if what they're doing is illegal or not, that's their decision. But they at least need to know what they're doing is breaking the law.

no no, i don't intend to do anything illegal. if i can't use it, i won't.

it sounds like 'public domain footage' is what i'm looking for. from what i understand this is free to use, and has no copyright.

I'm glad to see there are still people in the business who care about playing by the rules and doing things the right way. :)

I think public domain footage suits your needs to a tee. And it should be fairly easy to find historical war footage in the public domain.

Good luck!
