i'm writing a script in which the prelude to the film is a murder which the protagonist dreams. was wondering how to link the intro to the protagonist waking up and realising it was just a dream, so to say. the murder's actually a flashback, and i've already tried a few hundred times to make the connection, but it's just not working...a little help please?!
cheers!

the easy boring way is: the dream is shot with some sort of distorted visuals and sound, at the climactic moment during the dream, the protagonist awakes in the middle of the night, sweating and shaking.

the advantage is that the audience has seen this a ziilion times and will understand what's going on. The disadvantage is that the audience has seen this a ziilion times...

There are variations, e.g. at the climactic moment, cut to breakfast scene with bleary eyed protagonist, someone asks "did you have the dream again?"

Maybe you could have the protagonist narrate that whole prelude (or just the end of it), and then reveal that he was describing the dream to someone in a conversation. Still cliched, but it all really depends on how you execute.

Show it that open (in story proper) with him explaining it to a friend (or someone) - spells out that it's a dream.

Or as suggested - visuals. Film it in B&W ?
